Professional Summary How to write a lawyer professional summary
Your professional summary is 3–4 lines that answer one hiring partner's question: "Will this candidate own a deal end-to-end / argue a complex matter?" Without it, even strong drafting reads as a list of firm names.
A strong summary names three things: years in practice, primary domain (corporate M&A, litigation, IP, employment), and one outcome — deal value, judgment, or client portfolio. Skip "passionate and detail-oriented lawyer".
WeakDetail-oriented and passionate lawyer with strong knowledge of corporate law. Looking for a challenging role at a reputed law firm.
StrongCorporate associate with 4 years at Skadden Arps (New York). Worked on 8 M&A and PE deals worth $520M aggregate; led due-diligence streams on three transactions. Harvard Law School LL.B; enrolled with State Bar of NY & Goa.
Recruiter tip
For corporate / M&A, lead with deal value and top firms involved. For litigation, lead with court hierarchy (HC, SC) and one significant matter. For in-house, lead with org size and one project owned.
