Bus Driver Resume 2026 - CDL class, endorsements and an accident-free record free

A bus driver resume is a licence document before it is a career document. The first block has to say the class of commercial driver's licence you hold, which endorsements are on it, which restrictions are on it, and whether your DOT medical certificate is current - because a safety manager cannot interview somebody who is not legally able to drive the vehicle. Class B covers most buses, the P endorsement covers passengers, S covers school buses and sits on top of P, and a restriction such as L for no air brakes quietly disqualifies you from almost every transit and school run there is. After the licence, the page is about one thing: your safety record, written as years or miles rather than as the word safe. Then comes the segment, because transit, school, motorcoach and paratransit are four different jobs with different passengers, different paperwork and different hours.

Bus driver resume sample

The order a safety manager reads in: licence class with endorsements and restrictions first, medical card currency second, accident-free record third, route and ridership volume fourth, passenger handling fifth.

Licence block at the very top

CDL Class B, P and S endorsements, restrictions listed or stated as none, issuing state and expiry, DOT medical certificate with its expiry. Put it above the work history, not inside the education section.

Safety as a number

Years or miles without a preventable accident, consecutive clean roadside and annual inspections, a moving violation count on your record. Safe driver with a clean record is the same claim without the evidence.

Segment and route detail

Fixed route or charter, route length, stops per run, daily ridership or students carried, on-time performance, and whether you held an extra board or a bid route. These describe the job you actually did.

ATS friendly

Transit authorities and school districts screen in volume, often with a filter looking for the literal string CDL Class B or an endorsement letter. Write them as plain text in a single column, not inside a table or a graphic badge, mirror the posting title in your headline because the parser reads that line as your job title, use MM/YYYY dates, and skip the photo and the icons.

Sample resume text

Use it as a reference: keep the structure and wording, put in your own facts and numbers.

Profile

Bus driver profile summary

Three or four lines: licence class and endorsements, years driving commercially, the segment, your accident-free record, and the volume you carried. A safety manager is deciding whether you can be put on a route with passengers behind you, and the two things that answer it are the licence and the record.

Without commercial passenger experience, write the same paragraph from whatever driving you have done. Straight truck, delivery, shuttle, van or military driving all count if you give the miles, the vehicle, and the accident record. Say where you are on the CDL: permit held, ELDT theory and behind-the-wheel complete, skills test scheduled - a safety manager will train somebody who is halfway through the process.

WeakReliable and friendly bus driver with a clean driving record and excellent customer service skills. Safety-conscious team player looking for a stable position with a good company.
StrongTransit Operator, 7 years, CDL Class B with P and S endorsements, no restrictions, DOT medical certificate valid to 09/2027. Roughly 210,000 miles with no preventable accident and no moving violations in 7 years. Average 11 wheelchair securements a week to ADA procedure. Extra board qualified on 9 routes.
Tip
Write the endorsement letters out as letters and as words - P (passenger) and S (school bus) - because a human skims for the words and an automated filter searches for the letter. Do the same with restrictions, and state none if you have none.
Skills

Bus driver skills for a resume

Licence, inspection discipline, passenger handling and route operation. Name the vehicles you have driven by length and type, name the securement standard, and name the systems you operated, because transit and school fleets screen on all three.

Hard skills

  • CDL Class B, and Class A where a combination vehicle is driven, with P and S endorsements
  • Air brake systems and the full air brake check: governor cut-in and cut-out, leakage test, low-pressure warning, spring brake application
  • Pre-trip, en-route and post-trip inspections, and the driver vehicle inspection report
  • Vehicles: 40-foot and 60-foot articulated transit coaches, Type A, C and D school buses, over-the-road motorcoaches, cutaway shuttles
  • ADA compliance: ramp and lift operation, wheelchair securement to WC-19 standards, four-point tiedowns, lap and shoulder belts, kneeling and stop announcements
  • School bus procedures: 8-way lights and stop arm, crossing procedure, loading zone discipline, post-trip child check, student harnesses and safety vests
  • Fixed route operation: headway and schedule adherence, destination signs, fare collection and farebox reconciliation, transfers, AVL and radio discipline
  • Motorcoach and charter: hours of service, electronic logging device, trip paperwork, luggage loading and weight distribution, interstate operation
  • Paratransit and shuttle: manifests, will-calls, on-time windows, passenger assists, door-to-door service
  • Defensive driving methods such as the Smith System, railroad crossing procedure, adverse weather and chain-up operation
  • Incident handling: accident and incident reports, evacuation drills, first aid, CPR and AED, fire extinguisher use
  • DOT compliance: medical examiner's certificate and self-certification category, Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse queries, MVR currency

Soft skills

  • Keeping a schedule without driving to it, and reporting a late run rather than making it up
  • Managing a full bus of students without stopping in a place that is unsafe to stop
  • Staying calm with a passenger who is shouting while the rest of the load watches
  • Explaining a fare or a policy once, clearly, and then moving the bus
  • Noticing a passenger who needs help before they ask for it
  • Refusing to move a vehicle you have found a defect on, and writing it up properly
  • Spotting a change in a regular rider and reporting a welfare concern to the right person
  • Working split shifts, early starts and an extra board without letting fatigue reach the seat
  • Learning a new route quickly and running it as if it were your own
  • Reporting your own near miss so the next driver gets the warning
Experience

How to write bus driver experience

Formula: vehicle, route, volume, safety record. Transported passengers safely to their destinations is what the posting said. Route length and number of stops, boardings or students carried per day, on-time percentage, miles or years with no preventable accident, consecutive inspections with no defects, and securements performed are what a safety manager can use.

Say which segment each job was, because the skills do not fully transfer. Mark the difference between preventable and non-preventable if you have had an incident, since the distinction is how the industry records them and a flat claim of no accidents can look evasive. Extra board or spare work is worth its own line: a driver who has run nine routes on short notice is more valuable than one who has run a single bid route for a decade.

Weak- Drove assigned bus route safely and on time, assisted passengers with boarding and completed daily vehicle inspections.
Strong- Operate 40-foot low-floor and 60-foot articulated coaches on fixed routes of 14 to 22 miles with 38 to 54 stops, averaging 430 boardings a shift at 94% on-time against the published headway; 210,000 miles with no preventable accident; 11 wheelchair securements a week to ADA procedure with no securement incident; 36 consecutive pre-trips and two annual inspections with no defect carried over.
What to include
Licence class, endorsements, restrictions and expiry - medical card expiry - vehicle types and lengths - route length and stops - boardings or students per day - on-time percentage - preventable accident record in miles or years - securements - extra board routes - training courses held.
Education

Licence, training and clearances

For a driver this section replaces education, and it is the section a safety manager actually verifies. Since 2022 a first-time CDL applicant must complete Entry-Level Driver Training from a provider on the FMCSA training provider registry, covering theory and behind-the-wheel, before taking the skills test - and the skills test itself is three separate parts: the pre-trip inspection, basic control skills and the road test. On top of that sit the DOT medical examiner's certificate with its self-certification category, Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse query consent, and for school transportation a fingerprint-based background clearance in most states. A high school diploma is often asked for and belongs in one line at the end.

  • CDL class, state of issue, expiry, endorsements and restrictions - written in full
  • DOT medical examiner's certificate with expiry and self-certification category
  • Entry-Level Driver Training completion, theory and behind-the-wheel, with the year
  • School bus certification and state fingerprint clearance, where you hold them
  • Passenger assistance training such as PASS certification for paratransit work
  • Defensive driving courses: Smith System, Transit Ambassador or equivalent, with dates
  • First aid, CPR, AED and bloodborne pathogen training, with expiry dates
  • Air brake and vehicle familiarisation training on specific coach models
  • High school diploma or GED, in one line
Careful
Never leave a medical certificate expiry off the resume or let an expired one sit on the page. A safety manager reads a missing or lapsed card as a hiring delay, and a lapsed card means you cannot be put on a route at all until it is renewed.
No experience

Bus driver resume with no experience

Transit agencies and school districts hire and train new drivers routinely, often paying for the CDL, so a resume without passenger experience is normal. What it must do is remove every doubt about your record and your progress toward the licence. State your driving history in years and miles, your accident and violation record plainly, and exactly where you are in the CDL process: permit held, ELDT theory complete, behind-the-wheel hours logged, skills test booked.

Then show the half of the job that is not driving. Carrying passengers is customer service with safety attached, so any role where you handled the public, worked to a schedule and followed a written procedure is relevant. Retail, warehouse, care work, security and military service all transfer if you give the numbers - people served per shift, shifts started on time, procedures you were accountable for.

  • Years licensed and estimated miles driven, with your accident and moving violation record stated plainly
  • CDL progress: permit, ELDT theory and behind-the-wheel completion, skills test date
  • Any larger vehicle driving: box truck, van, 15-passenger van, forklift, military vehicles
  • Public-facing work with volume: customers or residents served per shift
  • Schedule and attendance evidence, including early starts and split shifts worked
  • First aid, CPR or safety certificates already held, and willingness to clear a background check and drug screen

Mistakes

Common mistakes

Licence details buried or missing

A CDL mentioned halfway down a job bullet, or tucked into education, can be missed by both a skimming manager and a filter searching for the string CDL Class B. It belongs in a labelled block directly under your name.

Endorsements and restrictions left out

P and S are what make you hireable for passengers and school runs, and a restriction such as L for no air brakes or E for no manual transmission changes which vehicles you can be assigned. Write both lists, and write none if there are no restrictions.

Safe driver with no number behind it

Every driver claims a clean record. Miles or years with no preventable accident, the number of moving violations on your MVR, consecutive clean inspections - those are the same claim in a form that can be checked.

No medical card status

A DOT medical examiner's certificate has an expiry and a self-certification category, and both matter for scheduling. Omitting it leaves the reader assuming paperwork trouble, which is an easy reason to move on.

Passenger handling missing for a passenger job

On school and paratransit work the securements, the ramp, the harnesses, the crossing procedure and the post-trip child check are the job. A resume that only describes driving reads as a truck driver applying for a bus.

A designed resume into a district or agency system

Public agencies recruit in volume through automated screening. Two columns interleave, a graphic badge holding your endorsements becomes invisible, and a table scrambles your dates. One column, standard headings, plain text.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

A short labelled licence block: CDL class, state of issue and expiry, endorsements, restrictions, and your DOT medical certificate expiry. A safety manager cannot progress an application without those facts, and automated screening often looks for the literal text. Put it directly under your name, above the summary, and keep it as plain text rather than inside a table or a graphic.
The P endorsement covers passenger vehicles and is required for essentially all bus work; the S endorsement covers school buses and sits on top of P. Restrictions cut the other way: L means no air brakes, Z means air brake equipped but not full air, E means no manual transmission, M and N limit the class of passenger vehicle, and K limits you to intrastate driving. List your endorsements and then list restrictions, or write none.
Use the industry's own distinction. Write miles or years with no preventable accident rather than no accidents, because preventable and non-preventable is how incidents are actually recorded and a blanket claim invites doubt. Add consecutive clean pre-trip and annual inspections, and the number of moving violations on your motor vehicle record, since that will be pulled anyway.
Yes, enough to be worth rewriting. Transit is schedule and headway adherence, fare collection, ADA ramps and securements, destination signs and radio discipline. School is route sheets, 8-way lights and the stop arm, crossing procedure, the post-trip child check and student management. Motorcoach is hours of service, the electronic logging device, driver vehicle inspection reports and over-the-road work. Lead with whichever one the role is.
Yes, and many agencies and districts train new drivers and sponsor the CDL. State exactly where you are in the process - permit held, Entry-Level Driver Training theory and behind-the-wheel complete, skills test booked - because since 2022 that training is a prerequisite for a first CDL. Then give your driving years and miles, your accident and violation record, and any public-facing work with volume attached.
Briefly, as facts rather than reassurance. Note that you consent to a Clearinghouse query, that you hold a current DOT medical certificate, and for school transportation that you hold or can clear a fingerprint-based background check, which most states require. Do not write paragraphs about it - one line each removes a question from the reader's mind.
Name the standard and give a frequency. Wheelchair securement to WC-19 standards using four-point tiedowns with lap and shoulder belts, ramp or lift operation, kneeling, and roughly how many securements a week you performed. On paratransit add manifests, will-calls, on-time windows and door-to-door assists, and PASS certification if you hold it.
Yes - the full sample above and all the templates on this page. You can build your own version in the builder for free and see the finished result; downloading the PDF is paid, by subscription or a one-time payment. The layouts stay single column with plain headings, which matters because transit authorities and school districts screen large volumes automatically.
