CAD Drafter Resume 2026 - discipline, software and drawing output sample free

A CAD drafter resume is screened on two things before anybody looks at your drawings: which discipline you draft in, and which software you draft it in. Those two facts decide whether the file goes any further, because a mechanical drafter who lives in Inventor and a structural drafter who lives in Revit are not interchangeable, and a firm hiring for Civil 3D does not want to retrain somebody from Plant 3D. After that, the reader wants volume and accuracy: how many drawings and sheets you produce, how big the assemblies and models are, how fast you turn redlines around, and whether your sets come back from checking clean. The standards you work to matter too, because a drafter who can quote ASME Y14.5 or the National CAD Standard is a drafter whose sheets will not need rebuilding. Name the discipline, name the software and its version, put a number on your output, and the resume does its job.

CAD drafter resume sample

The order an engineering or design manager reads in: discipline first, software and version second, output volume and set size third, standards and revision discipline fourth - with a portfolio link that works.

Discipline stated in the first line

Mechanical, architectural, structural, civil, electrical, piping or MEP. This is the hardest filter on the resume, and a drafter who writes only 'CAD drafter' makes the reader guess, which usually means moving on.

Software with versions and modules

AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks, Revit, Civil 3D, MicroStation, Plant 3D, Navisworks, and the data management system - Vault, PDM, Teamcenter or Windchill. Firms filter on these strings directly.

Output in drawings, sheets and parts

Drawings released per week, sheets in a typical set, parts in the largest assembly you have modelled, revisions processed, redline turnaround. Drafting is production work and production has a rate.

ATS friendly

Engineering and architecture firms screen on software and discipline keywords before a human opens the portfolio. Single column, standard headings, plain strings like AutoCAD, Revit, GD&T, ASME Y14.5, no photo, no tables and no sample drawings pasted into the resume.

Sample resume text

Use it as a reference: keep the structure and wording, put in your own facts and numbers.

Profile

CAD drafter profile summary

Three or four lines: your discipline, your years in it, the software you are fluent in, the type and size of the work you produce, and the standards you draft to. A design manager is filling a seat on a specific project with a specific deliverable, and the question underneath every line is whether your sheets would come back from the checker clean.

If you are early in your career or coming out of a drafting programme, write the same paragraph around the software and the standards instead of the years. Which packages you are genuinely fluent in, what you have modelled and detailed even in coursework, whether you can produce a full dimensioned sheet with a correct title block and revision block, and whether you understand GD&T rather than just having heard of it. Those are the competencies a firm is testing in the drafting exercise they will give you.

WeakSkilled CAD drafter with experience using AutoCAD and other design software. Detail-oriented and able to work independently or as part of a team to produce accurate technical drawings to deadlines.

Tip
Put a first-check pass rate on the page if you have one, or any measure of how often your sheets come back marked. Accuracy is the whole product in drafting, and 'detail-oriented' is the phrase people use when they have no evidence of it.
Skills

CAD drafter skills for a resume

Software fluency, drafting standards, discipline knowledge and data management. Separate what you use daily from what you have touched, because a firm that hires you on a claim of Revit fluency will find out in the first week.

Hard skills

  • 2D drafting: AutoCAD and AutoCAD Mechanical, MicroStation, layer and linetype standards, paper space and viewports, sheet sets, external references, blocks and dynamic blocks, annotative scaling, plot styles and batch plotting
  • 3D modelling: Inventor, SolidWorks, Creo or NX - part modelling, assemblies and constraints, weldments, sheet metal with flat patterns and bend tables, frame generator, configurations and design tables, derived and skeletal modelling
  • Building and infrastructure: Revit for architecture, structure or MEP, family creation and parameters, worksets and shared coordinates, levels and grids, schedules, Civil 3D for surfaces, alignments, profiles, corridors and grading, and Plant 3D for piping and P&IDs
  • Coordination: Navisworks clash detection and resolution tracking, model federation, IFC and DWG exchange, point cloud and scan-to-BIM workflows, level of development expectations from LOD 200 to LOD 400
  • Drawing standards and conventions: ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, ASME Y14.100 drawing practices, the United States National CAD Standard and AIA layer guidelines, ISO 128 projection conventions, welding symbols per AWS A2.4, surface finish and thread callouts
  • Documentation substance: plans, sections, elevations, details, exploded and isometric views, dimension strings and datum selection, tolerance stack-up checks, fit classes, parts lists and bills of material generated from the model, revision clouds and revision history blocks
  • Revision and release control: engineering change orders and change notices, rev levels, as-built and record drawings, redline markup in Bluebeam Revu, drawing register maintenance, released versus work-in-progress states
  • Data management: Autodesk Vault, SolidWorks PDM, Teamcenter or Windchill - check in and check out, item and part numbering schemes, where-used and revision reporting, file naming and folder standards
  • Project deliverables: permit and bid sets, shop and fabrication drawings, submittal packages, cut sheets, erection drawings, installation and service manual illustration
  • Supporting technical knowledge: reading engineer redlines and specifications, basic materials and fabrication processes, machining and sheet metal manufacturability, fastener and hardware selection, dimensional inspection reports
  • Automation and efficiency: parametric templates, iLogic or SolidWorks macros, AutoLISP routines, scripted batch plotting, standard detail libraries, and spreadsheet-driven configurations
  • Confidentiality awareness for portfolio work: proprietary drawings, non-disclosure obligations and export-controlled content under ITAR or EAR, which cannot be shown and must be substituted or redrawn

Soft skills

  • Asking the engineer the question now rather than detailing a guess
  • Taking a heavily marked-up redline set without treating it as criticism
  • Spotting that two sheets in the same set disagree, before the shop does
  • Holding the layer and title block standard when a deadline invites shortcuts
  • Explaining to a fabricator over the phone what a detail actually means
  • Keeping the drawing register honest so nobody builds from a superseded sheet
  • Estimating honestly how long a set will take, including the checking
  • Noticing a dimension that cannot be inspected and raising it
  • Picking up a half-finished model from somebody who has left and respecting their intent
  • Keeping proprietary and export-controlled drawings out of your portfolio without being asked
Experience

How to write CAD drafter experience

Formula: what you drafted plus how much plus in what plus to what standard. 'Created and revised technical drawings using AutoCAD' is the job description. The product or structure type, drawings released per week, sheets in a typical set, part count in your largest assembly, the standards you worked to and your check results are the lines that distinguish you.

Give each employer a context line: industry, what the company makes or builds, project size and whether you worked from engineer redlines, from scratch, or from field survey and scans. Then separate out anything beyond production drafting - owning the CAD standard, building the template and library, training other drafters, running clash coordination, maintaining the drawing register, or acting as checker - because those are the responsibilities that move a drafter to senior or designer level.

Weak- Produced detailed drawings in AutoCAD and Inventor, made revisions as requested by engineers and maintained drawing files.
Strong- Released 18 to 25 production drawings a week for custom material handling equipment, detailing weldments, sheet metal and machined parts in assemblies up to 740 components, drafting to ASME Y14.5 and the company's Y14.100-based standard, with 96 percent of sheets passing first check and redlines turned around within one working day.
What to include
Discipline and product or structure type - software with versions and modules - drawings released per week - sheets per typical set - part count in the largest assembly - standards drafted to - first-check pass rate and redline turnaround - revision and change orders processed - clashes resolved - templates, libraries and standards you built - drafters trained - data management system used.
Education

Education and certification

Drafting is one of the few technical fields where a two-year qualification is the normal and fully respected entry route. An associate degree or a certificate in drafting, CAD technology, mechanical design or architectural technology is the common credential, and a portfolio carries at least as much weight as the diploma. Certification matters here because it is verifiable and because it proves fluency rather than exposure, which is the exact doubt a hiring manager has about every software line on the page.

  • Associate degree or certificate in drafting and design technology, CAD, mechanical design, architectural technology or civil engineering technology, with institution and years
  • Autodesk Certified Professional or Certified User in the specific product - AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor or Civil 3D - named individually with the year
  • SolidWorks certification at CSWA, CSWP or CSWE level, with any advanced or specialist modules such as sheet metal, weldments or drawing tools
  • ASME Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Professional certification at Technologist or Senior level, which is the strongest single credential a mechanical drafter can hold
  • American Design Drafting Association certification, including the Apprentice Drafter or Certified Drafter designations
  • NICET certification for civil and construction technician work, at the level you hold
  • A bachelor's degree if you have one, in engineering technology, architecture or industrial design, in a single line
  • Short courses worth listing: BIM coordination, point cloud and reality capture, Navisworks clash detection, Bluebeam markup workflows, and any training on the data management system you used
  • Portfolio link, stated plainly as a URL, containing only work you are permitted to show
Careful
Do not put client drawings, proprietary details or anything export-controlled under ITAR or EAR into a portfolio or attach a sample sheet to an application. Redraw a comparable part yourself, or show coursework. A confidentiality or export breach on an application is a hard stop in engineering, and defence-adjacent employers check.
No experience

CAD drafter resume with no experience

This is a field where a portfolio can beat a resume, and that is genuinely good news for somebody starting out. Firms hire entry-level drafters out of two-year programmes constantly, and they test with a drafting exercise rather than trusting the claims on the page - which means the resume only has to get you to that exercise.

Lead with the software you are actually fluent in and be honest about the rest, because a one-week bluff is uncomfortable for everyone. Then show that you can produce a complete deliverable rather than a pretty model: a dimensioned sheet with a correct title block, revision block and parts list, drawn to a named standard, is the thing that separates a graduate who is ready from one who is not. Coursework projects count if you describe them as deliverables with sheet counts and standards, and so does anything you have drawn for a club, a competition, a maker project or a family business.

  • Software fluency split honestly into daily use, working knowledge and exposure, with versions
  • Coursework projects described as deliverables: sheet count, part count, standard used, and whether the set was checked
  • Evidence you can finish a sheet: title block, revision block, parts list, dimension strings and tolerances to a named standard
  • GD&T understanding at whatever level is real - feature control frames you can read and apply, datums you can select
  • Any hands-on manufacturing or construction exposure, which makes your drawings buildable and is a genuine differentiator
  • Certification earned or scheduled, with the date, since a software certification is the cheapest proof of fluency available to you
  • A portfolio link with four to eight pieces, each captioned with the software, the standard and what you were solving
  • Internship, co-op, apprenticeship or volunteer drafting work, with what you produced and for whom

Mistakes

Common mistakes

Discipline never stated

'CAD drafter' on its own covers mechanical, architectural, structural, civil, electrical and piping work, which are different jobs with different standards and different software. A reader hiring for one of them cannot tell whether you are a candidate, and the default assumption is that you are not.

A flat list of fifteen software packages

Nobody is fluent in fifteen packages, and a reader who sees the list treats all of it as unverified. Split the list into daily use, working knowledge and exposure, give versions, and you convert an obviously padded block into a credible one.

No output volume anywhere

Drafting is production work. Drawings per week, sheets in a set, parts in an assembly, revisions processed and redline turnaround are the natural units, and a resume without any of them gives the manager nothing to compare you against.

Standards not mentioned

ASME Y14.5, Y14.100, the National CAD Standard and the AIA layer guidelines are what make a sheet usable by somebody other than you. A drafter who never names a standard reads as somebody who draws to house habit, which means their first set will be rebuilt.

A portfolio that is missing, broken or not allowed

A drafting application without a portfolio link is incomplete, and a link that is dead or demands a sign-up is worse than none. Equally serious in the other direction: showing a former employer's proprietary or export-controlled drawings is a breach, so redraw comparable work instead.

A designed resume full of graphics the system cannot read

Drafters are visual people and often build a beautiful resume with icon skill bars and an embedded drawing, which is exactly the file an applicant tracking system destroys. It converts your document to plain text, so a software table collapses and the package names the filter is searching for vanish with it, a two-column layout interleaves skills into your job bullets, and a drawing thumbnail contributes nothing at all.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Your discipline and your software, in that order, in the first line of the summary. Mechanical, architectural, structural, civil, electrical, piping or MEP tells the reader whether you are even in the right category, and the software tells them whether you can start without retraining. Everything else on the page is read through those two facts.
Split it by actual depth. A short daily-use group with versions, a working-knowledge group, and an exposure group if you need one. 'Inventor 2025 and AutoCAD Mechanical daily; Revit 2024 working knowledge for structural coordination; SolidWorks exposure' is honest and readable, and it survives the interview question about which one you would pick for a weldment. A flat list of a dozen packages makes a reader discount all of them.
More than most people think. Drawings released per week, sheets in a typical set, part count in the largest assembly you have modelled, revisions and change orders processed per month, redline turnaround time, first-check pass rate, clashes identified and resolved, and the size of any template, family or detail library you built. If you automated something, state the time it removed from a repeating task.
Yes. Drafting is judged on sheets, and a plain URL in your contact block with four to eight captioned pieces is expected. Caption each one with the software, the standard, the sheet count and what you were solving, because a manager wants to see your dimensioning and annotation decisions rather than a rendered model. Keep the resume itself text-only and leave the visual work in the portfolio.
Usually not, and this is a real risk rather than a technicality. Client and employer drawings are proprietary, often covered by a non-disclosure agreement, and in defence, aerospace and some industrial work they may be export-controlled under ITAR or EAR, where sharing them is a legal matter and not just a policy one. The safe route is to redraw a comparable generic part or structure yourself on your own time, or to show coursework and personal projects, and to say in the caption that the piece was created for portfolio use.
Collect the work that is not production drafting and give it its own bullets. Owning the CAD standard, building templates, title blocks, families and detail libraries, acting as checker on other people's sets, maintaining the drawing register and release process, running clash coordination, training new drafters, and writing automation such as iLogic rules or AutoLISP routines are all beyond-the-board responsibilities. Add any design input you genuinely had - sizing a member, selecting hardware, proposing a manufacturability change that was adopted - because the step up is judged on judgement, not speed.
Engineering and architecture firms filter on software and discipline strings before anyone opens your portfolio, so the parser is the first reader. It converts your file to plain text in reading order, takes the line under your name as your job title - write 'Mechanical CAD Drafter' or the posting's exact title rather than 'Design Professional' - and reads your skills block as a flat keyword list, which is why 'AutoCAD', 'Revit', 'Civil 3D', 'GD&T' and 'ASME Y14.5' must exist as text and not inside a graphic or a skill-bar image. Keep one column so the skills column cannot interleave into your job bullets, avoid tables for the software list because the rows collapse and lose their labels, use standard headings, and write dates consistently as 06/2019 - 11/2025.
Yes - the full sample above, and all templates on this page. You can assemble your own resume from any of them in the builder for free and see the result; downloading the finished PDF is paid, by subscription or a one-time payment. The builder keeps the layout parseable, which matters because firms screen on software and discipline keywords before a design manager reads anything.
