CNA Resume 2026 - certification, registry and patient care sample free

A CNA resume is read by a nurse manager who is short-staffed today and will be short-staffed next month. She is checking that your certification is active on the state registry, that you can carry the ratio on her unit, and that you will still be there in six months. That last one is why turnover-proof detail matters: how long you stayed, how many residents or patients you took per shift, whether you handled the heavy total-care hall or the light one. The setting changes the job completely - long-term care is a high ratio and long relationships, a hospital floor is higher acuity with more clinical monitoring, and acute units expect you to catch changes and escalate fast. Below is a full US sample, plus how to write the resume when your real goal is a bridge into an LPN or RN programme.

CNA resume sample

The structure a nurse manager reads in a hallway: certification and registry status first, setting and ratio second, clinical skills and reliability third.

Certification and registry status

State CNA certification with the state named and the registry status active, plus the expiration. Some states use their own title, such as STNA in Ohio or NAC in Washington. Use the title the state uses, because that is what the manager verifies.

Ratio and setting

Residents or patients per shift, unit type, shift pattern. Twelve residents on a long-term care hall and six patients on a medical-surgical floor are different jobs, and the number tells the manager whether you can carry hers.

Clinical skills named

Vitals, intake and output, blood glucose checks where permitted, mechanical lifts, catheter care support, feeding assistance, restorative care. Naming them removes the guesswork about what she can assign you.

ATS friendly

Hospital systems and long-term care operators parse applications first. Single column, standard headings, no photo, no tables, and both 'CNA' and 'certified nursing assistant' written out so the parser and the recruiter both find you.

CNA profile summary

Three or four lines: years certified, the state and registry status, the setting, the ratio you carry, and one outcome. Falls reduced on your hall, pressure injuries prevented, call lights answered faster, a survey passed with no citations on your unit.

If you are heading toward nursing school, say so in one clause rather than a paragraph. Managers hire CNAs who are studying for LPN or RN all the time, and many employers fund it. What they want to know is whether you will work your shifts while you study, so pair the ambition with evidence of reliability.

WeakHardworking and compassionate CNA with a passion for patient care and a strong work ethic. Seeking a position in a healthcare facility where I can help patients and grow in my nursing career.

Tip
Write the state's own title. Ohio uses STNA, Washington uses NAC, other states use CNA or nurse aide. A nurse manager searching her state registry wants the exact term, and using it signals that you know the system you work in.
Skills

CNA skills for a resume

Direct care, monitoring and the documentation a unit runs on. Every line should be something a charge nurse could assign you at the start of a shift.

Hard skills

  • Activities of daily living: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, incontinence and perineal care
  • Transfers and mobility: gait belt, two-person assist, Hoyer and sit-to-stand mechanical lifts, ambulation
  • Vital signs: blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature, pulse oximetry, height and weight
  • Intake and output recording, feeding assistance, aspiration precautions, thickened liquid diets
  • Blood glucose checks where the state and facility permit, with results reported to the nurse
  • Skin integrity checks, repositioning schedules and pressure injury prevention
  • Catheter and ostomy care support within the nurse aide scope
  • Restorative care: range of motion, walking programmes, bed mobility as assigned by therapy
  • Documentation systems: PointClickCare, MatrixCare, Epic, Cerner
  • Infection control and isolation precautions, PPE use, and safe handling under OSHA standards

Soft skills

  • Answering a call light quickly enough that the resident stops needing to use it
  • Handling resistance to care from someone with dementia without forcing the issue
  • Noticing and reporting a change early: confusion, reduced intake, a reddened heel, a new bruise
  • Getting through a heavy assignment without letting the last resident get the worst care
  • Keeping dignity in the room when the shift is running an hour behind
  • Working with a family who is angry about something that happened before you arrived
  • Clean hand-off at shift change so nothing gets lost between shifts
  • Speaking up to the charge nurse when something is wrong, even when she is busy
  • Supporting a new CNA on the floor instead of leaving them to sink
  • Showing up for the shifts you signed for, which is what nurse managers mean by reliability
Experience

How to write CNA experience

Formula: setting plus ratio plus acuity plus outcome. 'Provided patient care' is the certification, not the job. A nurse manager wants to know how many people you cared for, how sick or dependent they were, and what got better on your watch.

Acuity is the detail most CNAs leave out and the one that carries weight. Total care versus ambulatory residents, memory care, bariatric residents, hospice, post-surgical patients, isolation rooms. A hall of twelve total-care residents is a very different shift from twelve who dress themselves, and a manager reading the resume cannot tell unless you say.

Weak- Assisted residents with bathing, dressing and feeding, took vital signs and reported to the nurse.
Strong- Carried 10-14 total-care residents per night shift on a memory care hall, including mechanical lift transfers and two-person repositioning every two hours; hourly rounding on the four highest fall-risk residents cut falls on the hall by about 40% over two quarters.
What to include
Setting and unit type - residents or patients per shift - acuity and total-care load - lifts and equipment used - documentation system - falls, pressure injuries or survey results.
Education

Certification, registry and training

CNA certification comes from a state-approved training programme followed by a competency evaluation with a written and a skills portion, after which you are listed on the state nurse aide registry. Requirements and even the job title differ by state, so write yours exactly as the state does, with the registry status.

  • State-approved nurse aide training programme: provider, city and completion year
  • State certification and nurse aide registry listing, with the state, status and expiration date
  • Reciprocity or endorsement status if you certified in one state and work in another
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers, American Heart Association, with the expiration date
  • Additional facility or state training: dementia care, restorative aide, medication aide where your state offers that credential
  • Continuing education and in-service hours completed for renewal
  • Nursing programme enrolment: LPN or RN, school, expected completion, and prerequisites finished
Careful
Certification lapses are a hard stop. Write the expiration date and the registry status, and if renewal is in progress, say so with the date, because a manager cannot schedule an aide whose registry entry is not active.
First job

CNA resume with no experience

New CNAs get hired constantly, because the units are short. What stalls an application is a resume that gives a manager nothing to schedule against. Lead with the certification and registry status, then write the clinical portion of your training programme as experience, because that is exactly what it was.

Say how many residents you cared for during clinicals, in what setting, and which skills you were checked off on. Then add the reliability evidence: a job you held while training, a shift pattern you can work, transport you can rely on. Managers hiring new aides are buying attendance and teachability, so make both visible.

  • Certification and state registry status, with the date listed
  • Clinical rotation as an entry: facility, hours, residents cared for, skills checked off
  • BLS current, plus TB test and any facility health requirements completed
  • Availability: nights, weekends, holidays, double shifts, short-notice calls
  • Any prior job showing reliability and physical stamina, written with hours and volume

Mistakes

Common mistakes

Registry status missing

Certification with no state, no status and no expiration is the most common failure on CNA resumes. A manager has to verify you on the registry before your first shift, and a file that makes that harder gets set aside for one that does not.

No ratio, no acuity

Residents per shift and how dependent they were is the core of the job. Without it, a manager reading two resumes has no way to tell which candidate has carried a load like hers, and she will assume the lighter one.

Duties copied from the job description

Bathing, dressing, feeding, vitals - every CNA resume lists them. The differentiators are falls prevented, pressure injuries avoided, call light response, survey results, and how long you stayed on a hard unit.

Nothing about lifts and equipment

Hoyer and sit-to-stand lifts, two-person transfers, bariatric equipment and gait belts decide which assignments you can safely take. Naming them is practical information a charge nurse uses when she builds the assignment sheet.

Job hopping left unexplained

CNAs move between facilities often and everyone knows why. A short reason - facility closed the unit, agency contract ended, relocated, returned to school - turns a pattern that looks unstable into a normal career in this field.

Decorative templates with photos

No photo on a US healthcare resume, and no sidebars or icon rows. Long-term care operators and hospital systems parse before they read, and your certification line is the last string you want a parser to drop.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

With the state, the exact title that state uses, the registry status and the expiration date. Ohio calls the role STNA, Washington uses NAC, and many states use CNA or nurse aide; using the local term signals that you know the system and makes verification straightforward. Put it in the header next to your name and repeat it in a certifications block. If you are certified in one state and applying in another, say whether reciprocity or endorsement is complete or in progress.
Yes, and pair it with acuity, because the ratio alone is misleading. Ten total-care residents with mechanical lift transfers is a far heavier assignment than fourteen who are mostly independent. Write residents or patients per shift, the unit type, and what proportion were total care, memory care or on isolation. This is the single most useful piece of information you can give a nurse manager, and most applicants skip it.
They build different things. Long-term care means higher ratios, strong relationships with residents over months and years, heavy personal care, and deep experience with dementia and end-of-life. Hospital floors mean lower ratios, higher acuity, more monitoring and documentation, faster turnover of patients, and more exposure to the clinical work you will do later as a nurse. If nursing school is the goal, hospital experience is generally more directly relevant, but long-term care builds the care skills faster and hires more readily.
Say it plainly in one line and back it with evidence. Write your programme, the school and the expected completion date, and list prerequisites already finished. Then show the manager she is not losing a reliable aide: your shift availability while studying, the years you have stayed at previous employers, and any charge-side work you have taken on such as precepting new aides. Many employers fund tuition for CNAs in nursing programmes, so signalling the plan can work in your favour rather than against it.
What your state and facility permit, which is narrower than what you may have been shown. Vitals, intake and output, feeding assistance, transfers with mechanical lifts, skin checks and repositioning, restorative range of motion, catheter care support and specimen collection are typical. Blood glucose checks and medication administration are permitted for aides only in certain states and often require an additional credential such as a medication aide certification. Never list a skill outside the scope where you are applying.
Leave them off the resume and discuss with the recruiter. What raises the rate is consistent: an active certification, hospital rather than long-term care in many markets, nights, weekends and doubles, agency or float pool work, specialty units such as dementia care or dialysis support, additional credentials like a medication aide certification where the state offers one, and staying long enough to be worth training. Check current local postings for the real range before naming a number.
One page. Give your current or most recent facility real detail with ratio, acuity and outcomes, and compress older roles to two bullets. If you have worked several short agency assignments, group them under the agency with a date range and describe the facility types and units, which reads far better than a list of one-month placements.

The builder keeps the layout ATS safe, which matters because hospital systems and long-term care operators parse applications before anyone reads them.
