A dental assistant resume is read by an office manager or the dentist herself, usually between patients, and she is looking for three things. Can you assist four-handed through a crown prep without the doctor having to ask for anything. Are you permitted to take radiographs in this state, and do you have the credential that proves it. Do you know the practice software well enough to schedule, chart and run the day without retraining. Certification through DANB, radiography permits that vary by state, and hands-on sterilization discipline are the hard filters. Everything else is negotiable. Below is a full US sample that puts the credential and the chairside scope where they will be seen, with the entry route for someone leaving a dental assisting programme and the ATS rules that apply when a large dental service organization is the one screening.

Dental assistant resume sample

The structure a dental office manager can read in fifteen seconds: credential and radiography permit first, chairside procedures second, practice software and pace third.

Credential and radiography up top

CDA (DANB), RHS or COA, plus the state radiography permit or the state's own registered dental assistant designation. Whether you can expose films is the question that decides your schedule, so it goes in the header, not in a certifications list at the bottom.

Procedures, not 'assisted the dentist'

Crown and bridge, endodontics, extractions and surgical assisting, impressions and scanning, temporaries, sealants where your state allows them. A resume that names procedures tells a doctor what she can book you for.

Practice software by name

Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental and Curve are the systems US practices actually run. Naming yours saves a week of retraining and gets you shortlisted over an equal candidate who wrote 'dental software'.

ATS friendly

Dental service organizations screen through applicant tracking systems before an office manager sees a file. Single column, standard headings, no photo, no tables or icon rows, and credentials written as plain text so the parser catches them.

Dental assistant profile summary

Three or four lines: years chairside, the credential with DANB named, your radiography status, the practice type, the software you chart in, and one number that shows pace. A doctor who is short-staffed this week is reading for exactly that.

A new graduate writes the same paragraph from the externship and the programme. Say the school, say whether the programme was CODA accredited, say what you were signed off to perform, and say what your state permit situation is. The last one is the question you will be asked first.

WeakFriendly and dependable dental assistant with great attention to detail and a passion for patient care. Seeking a position in a modern dental practice where I can continue to learn and grow.

Tip
Write the credential exactly: CDA (DANB). The Certified Dental Assistant title comes from the Dental Assisting National Board, and offices that credential staff will check the registry. A generic 'certified dental assistant' with no body named reads as a course certificate.
Skills

Dental assistant skills for a resume

What you do at the chair, what you are permitted to expose and place in your state, and the software and sterilization work that keeps a practice running. Every item should be something a doctor could hand you on your first morning.

Hard skills

  • Four-handed chairside assisting: crown and bridge, composites, endodontics, extractions and surgical assisting
  • Digital radiography: bitewings, periapicals, panoramic and cone beam, with positioning and retake control
  • Instrument sterilization: ultrasonic cleaning, cassette packaging, autoclave cycles, weekly spore testing and logs
  • Infection control to CDC dental guidelines and OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards
  • Impressions and intraoral scanning, bite registrations, model pouring and trimming
  • Provisional restorations, isolation, matrix placement and suction under the dentist's direction
  • Practice management software: Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental, Curve Dental
  • Scheduling and recall: block scheduling, hygiene recall lists, filling same-day cancellations
  • Dental insurance basics: eligibility checks, CDT codes, pre-authorizations and claim narratives
  • Inventory and operatory setup: tray setups by procedure, supply ordering, handpiece maintenance

Soft skills

  • Anticipating the instrument before the doctor asks for it
  • Calming an anxious or phobic patient who has avoided the chair for years
  • Working with children through a first filling without losing the appointment
  • Keeping the schedule honest and telling the front desk early when a column is slipping
  • Post-operative instructions given so the patient actually follows them at home
  • Discussing cost and treatment plans without promising what insurance will pay
  • Sterilization discipline that does not slip when the day is running late
  • Handling a doctor with strong preferences and adapting to a second doctor's different ones
  • Cross-covering the front desk when the practice is short a person
  • Keeping patient information private in an open operatory layout

How to write dental assistant experience

Formula: practice type plus procedures assisted plus patients a day plus what got better. 'Assisted the dentist with procedures' is the sentence every dental assistant writes, which makes it worth nothing on a stack of forty resumes.

Pace is the number that matters. Patients a day, operatories run, turnover time, radiographs taken per week, retake rate. A doctor running a busy general practice is measuring whether you can keep her columns full, and a resume that never mentions volume implies a slow office.

Weak- Assisted dentist during procedures, sterilized instruments and took X-rays as needed.
Strong- Assisted four-handed for 2 general dentists through 14-18 patients a day including crown preps, molar endodontics and surgical extractions, holding operatory turnover to 7 minutes and keeping a 40-patient schedule on time.
What to include
Practice type and size - procedures you assist - patients a day - radiographs and retake rate - software by name - sterilization and inspection results - front-desk cross-cover.
Education

Education, certification and state permits

Requirements are set state by state and they differ more in dentistry than in almost any other allied health field. Some states allow on-the-job training with a radiography course, others require a state registration or a CODA-accredited programme. Write your programme, your DANB credential and your state permit separately so a reader in any state can tell what you hold.

  • Dental assisting programme: school, city, completion year, and whether it was CODA accredited
  • CDA (DANB), with the component exams and the year certified
  • DANB component or standalone credentials where you hold them: RHS, ICE, COA
  • State radiography permit or credential, named the way your state names it, with the expiration
  • State registered or expanded functions designation, such as RDA or EFDA, where your state issues one
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers, American Heart Association, with the expiration date
  • Continuing education completed for renewal, including infection control and any state-mandated hours
Careful
Permitted duties are not portable. An expanded function you performed legally in one state may require a separate credential in another, so write what you are permitted to do where you are applying and say plainly what you would need to add.
First job

Dental assistant resume with no experience

Dental offices hire new assistants constantly, but they will not train someone who cannot take radiographs, because that is the part with a legal gate on it. If you have the radiography credential and the certification, say so in the first two lines and the lack of years stops mattering nearly as much.

Write your externship as a job entry: the practice, the specialty, the hours, the procedures you assisted, the software you charted in. Add anything that proves you can handle a room full of people and a schedule: retail, front desk, veterinary assisting, caregiving. Offices hire for reliability at this level, so give them evidence of it.

  • Externship written as an entry: practice, hours, procedures assisted, patients a day
  • CDA (DANB) passed or exam scheduled, with the date
  • State radiography credential in hand or in progress, with the expected date
  • Practice software you actually used during training, named
  • Transferable work with people and schedules, plus BLS current

Mistakes

Common mistakes

Radiography status left unclear

Whether you can expose radiographs decides how the doctor schedules you, and the rules are state specific. Leaving it out means the office manager has to call to find out, and often she just calls the next candidate instead.

'Assisted the dentist' as the whole job

Name the procedures. Crown and bridge, molar endo, surgical extractions, sealants, whitening, impressions and scanning. A doctor reading the list can picture you at her chair; without it she cannot.

The software unnamed

Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental and Curve are searchable keywords and a genuine hiring factor, because an assistant who already knows the system is productive in week one. 'Computer literate' matches nothing.

Nothing about sterilization

Infection control is the part of the job that gets a practice inspected and sued. Spore testing, cassette workflow, autoclave logs and a clean inspection history are exactly what a careful doctor wants to read, and almost nobody writes it.

Decorative templates with photos

US resumes carry no photo, and dental service organizations parse before they read. Sidebars, icons and skill bars drop credentials out of the parsed text, which is the one thing you cannot afford to lose.

The same resume for every specialty

Oral surgery wants surgical setup, monitoring and sterile technique. Orthodontics wants bonding, wire changes and appointment pace. Pediatrics wants behaviour management. Reorder the bullets to match the practice you are applying to.

Takeaways

Takeaways

Remember

  • CDA (DANB) written with the board named
  • Radiography permit and its state, in the header
  • Procedures you assist, listed by name
  • Patients a day and operatory turnover
  • Dentrix, Eaglesoft or Open Dental named
  • One page, no photo, no tables

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the state, and the CDA is recognised nationally rather than mandated everywhere. Some states let you work with on-the-job training, some require a state registration, and several accept or require DANB credentials for specific duties. The Dental Assisting National Board awards the CDA, along with component and standalone credentials such as RHS, ICE and COA. Even where it is optional, it is a hiring advantage and it travels between states better than a state-only designation, so write it with the board named.
No, and this is the single biggest variable in the job. Radiography is regulated state by state, usually through a permit, a course, an exam or a state credential, and some states also restrict who may operate specific equipment. Write the exact credential your state issues, with the expiration date, and if you are moving states, say what you hold now and what you would need to obtain. Do not write 'X-ray certified' with nothing behind it.
Expanded functions are duties a dental assistant may perform beyond basic chairside support after additional training and, in many states, an additional credential such as an EFDA designation. What is permitted differs sharply between states. If you hold one, put it in the header and in the certifications block, because it changes what the practice can bill and schedule. If you performed a duty in one state, do not imply you may perform it in another.
As a real experience entry with the practice name, the setting, the dates, the hours completed and what you assisted with. 'Completed 320 externship hours in a general practice, assisting 12-15 patients a day through composites, crown preps and extractions, charting in Eaglesoft' reads as work. A single line saying you completed a required externship reads as school, and school does not compete with experience.
The ones you have actually used, named by product: Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental, Curve Dental. Also name imaging software if you have used it, and say what you do inside the system - chart notes, treatment plans, recall lists, insurance narratives. A practice choosing between two equal candidates picks the one who already knows the system, because the first month costs less.
Nothing on the resume. Handle it in the application form or the phone screen. What raises the rate is consistent: an active CDA, a state radiography credential, expanded functions where your state offers them, surgical or orthodontic experience, fluency in a second language, and willingness to work a practice's busiest days. Check current local postings before you name a range, since dental assisting pay varies enormously between metro areas and between private practices and dental service organizations.
One page. Almost no dental assistant needs two, and an office manager reading between patients will not get to a second page anyway. Keep the current role detailed with procedures and volume, compress older practices to two bullets each, and drop unrelated jobs from more than five years ago unless they show customer-facing work you want to claim.
