Elementary Teacher Resume 2026 - licensure, classroom management and student growth free sample

An elementary teacher resume is read by a principal who has a class of twenty-four children and a start date, so the first thing that has to be visible is your licence: the state that issued it, the grade band it covers, and every endorsement attached to it. After that the page has to answer three questions fast. How do you run a room of seven-year-olds all day without losing the last forty minutes. How do you teach the same standard to a child reading two years ahead and a child reading two years behind, in the same lesson. And what happened to your students' reading and maths data while they were with you. Most district applications go through a portal such as Frontline, Applitrack or TalentEd, where a minimum-qualification screen checks licence type and grade band before a human ever opens the file, so the words on your resume have to match the words in the posting. Below is a full sample, the licensure section written the way principals actually read it, and how to prepare for the interview demo lesson.

Elementary teacher resume sample

The order that works for a principal reading forty applications between dismissal and a board meeting: licence and grade band first, then instruction, then what the data did.

Licence and endorsements at the top

State, licence or certificate type, grade band, endorsements and expiry date. Requirements are set state by state, so name the issuing state explicitly and check your own state education agency or board for the exact title, because a Texas certificate and an Ohio licence are not written the same way.

Classroom management as a described system

Not 'strong classroom management' but the routine you actually run: arrival, transitions, the signal you use, what happens on the third reminder, how you involve families. Principals hire the teacher whose room they can picture.

Growth data, not just scores

Elementary hiring runs on growth. Report what your class moved: reading levels, benchmark screener results, the share of students meeting their targets. Use your own district's measures by name and never quote a passing score as a national standard.

ATS and portal friendly

Single column, standard headings, no photo, no tables, no graphics. District portals parse your PDF into fields and drop anything hidden in a text box or an image, and the minimum-qualification screen matches keywords from the posting.

Use it as a reference: keep the structure and wording, put in your own facts and numbers.

Elementary teacher profile summary

Four lines: years in the classroom, the grades you have actually taught, your licence and endorsements, the curriculum you know, and one number from student growth. A principal decides from this paragraph whether to schedule you, so nothing about being passionate belongs in it.

A career changer or a new graduate writes the same paragraph from student teaching: the grade and school placement, the number of students, the curriculum used, your edTPA or state performance assessment, and what you can show from the unit you planned and taught yourself.

WeakPassionate and dedicated elementary educator who loves working with children and creating a positive learning environment. Seeking a teaching position at a school where I can make a difference in students' lives.
StrongElementary Teacher with 6 years in grades 2-4, Ohio Resident Educator Licence (Primary K-5) with a Reading endorsement. Taught balanced literacy and Eureka Math to classes of 25-28 in a Title I building; moved 21 of 27 students up at least one reading level in a year and cut behaviour referrals in my room from 19 to 4 after rebuilding transitions and a whole-class reset routine. Grade-level team lead and mentor to two first-year teachers.
Tip
Write the licence exactly as your state writes it, including grade band and endorsements. The portal screen matches on those words, and a reading endorsement or an ESL endorsement is often the single line that moves you ahead of an equally good candidate.
Skills

Elementary teacher skills for a resume

Instruction, assessment, management and family communication. Every line should survive the follow-up question 'show me what that looked like on a Tuesday'.

Hard skills

  • State teaching licence with grade band and endorsements (reading, ESL, gifted, early childhood)
  • Structured literacy and phonics instruction, guided reading, running records
  • Elementary maths curricula: Eureka Math, Bridges, Illustrative Mathematics, Investigations
  • Differentiated instruction: tiered tasks, flexible small groups, scaffolds and extensions
  • MTSS and RTI: tier 2 and tier 3 interventions, progress monitoring, referral paperwork
  • Benchmark and screening assessments: DIBELS, NWEA MAP, i-Ready, aimsweb
  • IEP and 504 plan implementation, accommodations and modifications in daily lessons
  • Standards-based lesson and unit planning aligned to state standards
  • Classroom technology: Google Classroom, Seesaw, interactive whiteboards, district SIS
  • Positive behaviour supports: PBIS, restorative conversations, behaviour contracts

Soft skills

  • Running a room of 25 seven-year-olds through six transitions without losing instructional time
  • Explaining a hard assessment result to a parent who expected a different number
  • Saying plainly when a child needs an evaluation, and documenting what you tried first
  • Working with an instructional aide or a co-teacher so both adults have a real job
  • Absorbing a curriculum change mid-year without abandoning what your class needs
  • Calm de-escalation when one child's crisis is watched by twenty-four others
  • Grade-level collaboration: sharing plans, moderating work samples, agreeing on pacing
  • Family communication in plain language, including families who speak another language at home
  • Taking coaching feedback and changing something visible by the next observation
  • Keeping your own hours sustainable so you are still standing in May
Experience

How to write elementary teaching experience

Formula: grade and setting, plus what you taught or built, plus the curriculum or method, plus what changed for the students. Not 'taught third grade', but which class, which programme, and where the data moved.

Put the school context in the line with the job title: grade, class size, and whether it was Title I, dual language, looping or multi-age. A principal reads that context first, because it tells them whether your experience transfers to their building.

Weak- Taught third grade students reading, writing and mathematics. Created lesson plans and maintained a positive classroom environment.
Strong- Taught grade 3 reading and maths to classes of 27 in a Title I building: rebuilt the literacy block into four guided reading groups with daily progress monitoring, and 21 of 27 students gained at least one reading level, with the tier 3 group closing the largest gap in the grade.
What to include
Grade and class size - curriculum or programme by name - how you grouped and differentiated - assessment used - growth in numbers - any team, mentoring or committee role.
Education

Licensure, degrees and certifications

This is the section a district portal screens against, so write it plainly and completely. Licensure is set state by state: your state education agency or professional standards board decides which tests, which coursework and which background checks apply, and reciprocity between states is partial rather than automatic. Name the issuing state, the exact licence title, the grade band, the endorsements and the valid-through date, and check your own board for anything you are unsure of rather than assuming a national rule.

  • State teaching licence or certificate: issuing state, title, grade band, endorsements, valid through
  • Bachelor's or master's degree, institution and year, with the teacher preparation programme named
  • Licensure exams you passed, written correctly: Praxis Subject Assessments, Praxis PLT, or your state's own tests such as TExES, CSET or NYSTCE
  • edTPA or your state's performance assessment, if it applied to your pathway
  • Endorsements and added credentials: reading, ESL or ESOL, gifted, early childhood, special education
  • Alternative certification route, if that is how you entered, named for what it is
  • Current training that principals value: structured literacy, CPI or de-escalation, first aid and CPR
  • Professional development with a result attached, not a list of attendance certificates
Careful
Do not describe a licence as pending if it has lapsed, and do not shorten a provisional or resident licence into the full professional one. Districts verify licensure directly with the state, and the correction always arrives before the offer.
New teachers

Elementary teacher resume with no full-time experience

A first-year applicant is not a person with no experience. You have a student teaching placement with a real grade, real children and a real curriculum, and most principals would rather read that in detail than read a summary of your coursework.

Write the placement like a job: school, grade, class size, how long you had lead instruction, the unit you planned and taught end to end, and what the assessment at the end of it showed. Add substitute teaching, camp and tutoring work, because they prove you can hold a room.

  • Student teaching placement written as a job, with grade, class size and curriculum named
  • One unit you planned, taught and assessed yourself, with the result in numbers
  • Substitute teaching, long-term sub assignments and the grades you covered
  • Tutoring, after-school programmes, summer camp and coaching work with children
  • Licence status stated exactly: issued, pending, or eligible with test dates completed
  • A link to a short portfolio: two lesson plans, an assessment you built, a management plan

Mistakes

Common mistakes

Licence buried on page two

If the portal screen cannot find your licence type and grade band, the application is filtered before a principal reads a word of it. Put the licence line directly under your name and repeat it in the education section.

A duty list instead of a classroom

'Planned lessons, graded work, communicated with parents' describes the job description, not you. Every teacher on the pile did those things. Write what you specifically built and what it changed.

No student growth anywhere

Reading levels, screener results, the share of students meeting targets, attendance in your room, referrals reduced. Without a number, six years of teaching reads like one year repeated six times.

Decorated resumes

Apple borders, coloured columns, a photo and a skills chart all look lovely and all break parsing. Design belongs in your classroom, not in a document a machine reads first.

The same resume for every district

A Title I urban building, a dual-language school and a rural K-8 want different first bullets. Reorder to match the posting and use its vocabulary, because the screen matches on exactly those words.

Ignoring the demo lesson

Many elementary interviews end with a sample lesson in a real classroom. Candidates who arrive without a plan, materials for the actual class size, and an exit ticket lose to candidates who do, regardless of the resume.

Takeaways

Takeaways

Remember

  • State, licence title, grade band and endorsements in the first block
  • Classroom management written as a routine, not an adjective
  • Differentiation shown through grouping and a real lesson
  • Growth data from named assessments, no invented thresholds
  • Keywords lifted from the district posting
  • Single column, no photo, no tables

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Our general teacher page covers the shape shared by every teaching resume. An elementary resume narrows it in three ways. Your licence covers a grade band rather than a subject, so the band and its endorsements do the screening work. Your day is self-contained, which means classroom management and the structure of the literacy and maths blocks matter more than subject depth. And your evidence is growth on early literacy and numeracy screeners rather than end-of-course exam results. If you teach a single subject to older students, the high school teacher page is the closer fit.
A state-issued teaching licence or certificate covering the elementary grade band, which in most states sits somewhere between K-5 and K-8. The route, the required coursework, the exams and the background checks are set state by state by the state education agency or professional standards board, and they change, so confirm the current requirements with your own state's board rather than relying on a summary. If you are moving states, ask specifically about reciprocity and what additional testing or coursework the receiving state adds.
The ones your target districts keep asking for in their postings. Reading or literacy specialist, ESL or ESOL, gifted education and special education are the ones that most often appear as a preferred qualification, and an ESL endorsement in particular can be the deciding line in districts with a growing multilingual population. Read ten current postings in the districts you want and count which endorsement appears most, then put that one on your resume when you have it and in your plan when you do not.
Describe the system, then the result. Name the framework if you use one, such as PBIS or responsive classroom practices, then say what happens in your room concretely: how children enter, what the attention signal is, how transitions are timed, what the response to a repeated behaviour looks like, and when families get a call. Finish with a number, such as referrals in your room falling across the year, or minutes of instructional time recovered from transitions. A principal who can picture your room will call you.
Ask first what grade, how many students, how long, and whether a specific standard is required, because those answers change everything. Then bring a short written plan with the standard and objective at the top, copies of materials for more children than you were promised, a way to check understanding at the end such as an exit ticket, and a plan for what the fast finishers do. Teach a small, complete thing rather than a spectacular thing you cannot finish. Panels look for whether you can hold attention, check for understanding and adjust in real time.
Report at class or group level and never name a child or attach anything identifiable. 'Twenty-one of twenty-seven students gained at least one reading level' is safe and useful. Do not carry printed student records to an interview, do not screenshot a data dashboard with names in it, and do not state a score as a national passing standard, because screeners and cut points differ by district and by state. If you want to show your process, bring an anonymised planning document instead.
The main hiring wave opens in late winter and runs through spring, once districts know their resignations and retirements, and there is a second wave right before the school year starts when late vacancies appear. Applying in the late wave is not a disadvantage if your paperwork is complete, because the schools filling those roles move fast. Have your licence, transcripts and references loaded into the district portal in advance, since incomplete applications sit unscreened no matter how good the resume is.
Yes - the full sample above, and all templates on this page. You can assemble your own resume from any of them in the builder for free and see the result; downloading the finished PDF is paid, by subscription or a one-time payment. The builder keeps the licence block near the top and the layout in a single column, which is what district portals parse cleanly.
