Waiter Resume 2026 - server sample with covers, POS and check average free

A waiter resume is read fast, often by a general manager between a lunch and a dinner shift, and it gets judged on three things: how much volume you can hold, whether you can run the point-of-sale system they already own, and whether you sell. Covers per shift, section size, check average and the certifications your state requires are the numbers that answer all three. Fine dining and casual dining hire for different signals - one wants coursing, wine service and polish, the other wants speed, turns and sidework that never falls behind - so the same experience has to be ordered differently for each. Below is a full sample written the way managers read it, plus the route into your first serving job when you have never worked a floor.

Waiter resume sample

The structure that gets a call back from both a steakhouse and a high-volume casual room: service style first, volume in numbers, POS by name, certifications where a manager can see them.

Volume in the first two lines

Section size and covers per shift tell a manager instantly whether you can handle their room. A six-table section on a Saturday turning three times is a different job from four tables of tasting menu, and the resume should say which one you have done.

The POS by name

Toast, Oracle MICROS Simphony, NCR Aloha, TouchBistro, Square for Restaurants. A server who already knows the terminal costs less to train, and managers search for the system they run.

Selling, not just carrying

Check average, appetizer and dessert attachment, wine by the glass, featured-item contests won. Service is the job, but revenue per guest is what gets a server moved to the best sections.

ATS friendly

Restaurant groups and hotel chains run applications through a tracking system before a human sees them. Single column, standard headings, no photo, no tables or graphics, keywords taken from the posting itself.

Use it as a reference: keep the structure and wording, put in your own facts and numbers.

Waiter profile summary

Three or four lines: years on the floor, the service style you know, the size of section and volume you carry, the POS you run, and your alcohol and food handler credentials. A manager decides from this paragraph whether to text you about a trail shift, so every line has to be something a floor can use tonight.

With no restaurant experience, write the same paragraph from transferable volume: retail on a holiday weekend, catering banquets, barista work, a busser or food runner shift. Name the food handler card you already hold, because in many states you cannot be scheduled without one and having it already makes you cheaper to hire.

WeakFriendly and hardworking server with excellent customer service skills. Team player looking for a position at a busy restaurant where I can use my people skills and grow.
StrongServer with 4 years in full-service dining, Austin TX. Carry a six-table section through 120-140 covers on weekend dinner, three turns a night. Toast and Oracle MICROS Simphony, wine by the glass and cocktail coursing, check average 18% above house on the dinner shift. ServSafe Food Handler and TIPS certified, TABC seller-server permit current. Open nights, weekends and holidays.
Tip
Write covers, not shifts. 'Served guests in a busy restaurant' says nothing; '120-140 covers on a Saturday dinner across six tables' tells a manager exactly which station you can be dropped into.
Skills

Waiter skills for a resume

Floor mechanics, a point-of-sale system, menu and beverage knowledge, and the compliance credentials your state requires. Every line should be something a manager could test on a trail shift.

Hard skills

  • POS operation: Toast, Oracle MICROS Simphony, NCR Aloha, TouchBistro, Square for Restaurants
  • Section and cover management: six to eight tables, staggered seating, three turns per dinner service
  • Coursing and firing: timing appetizers, entrees and desserts with the kitchen and expo
  • Wine service: opening and pouring tableside, by-the-glass list, pairing suggestions, decanting
  • Beverage and cocktail knowledge: spirits categories, house cocktails, non-alcoholic program
  • Allergen and dietary handling: gluten, shellfish, nut and dairy protocols, communicating to the kitchen
  • Food safety: ServSafe Food Handler, temperature holding, cross-contamination control
  • Responsible alcohol service: TIPS or ServSafe Alcohol, checking ID, refusing service, state seller-server permit
  • Cash and payment handling: split checks, comps and voids, tableside card terminals, tip-out reconciliation
  • Sidework and closing: station stock, rollups, condiment and glassware par levels, closing checklist sign-off

Soft skills

  • Reading a table in the first thirty seconds - business lunch, first date, family with a toddler
  • Staying composed when the kitchen is twenty minutes behind and four tables want an answer
  • Recovering a bad experience at the table before it becomes a review
  • Selling without pressure - a real recommendation instead of a script
  • Working with the line cooks and expo instead of shouting across the pass
  • Picking up a teammate's table when they are buried, and asking when you are
  • Remembering regulars, their drink and where they like to sit
  • Taking correction in a pre-shift lineup without carrying it onto the floor
  • Keeping pace and manner steady through a double
  • Clear communication with bussers, runners and bartenders during a rush
Experience

How to write waiter experience

Formula: service style plus section size plus covers plus the number that proves you sold or saved something. Not 'took orders and served food', but what kind of room, how many guests, on which system, and what you moved.

Name the restaurant type even when the name means nothing outside the city: 'chef-driven American, 90 seats, $$$' or '220-seat casual, full bar, three turns'. A manager in another state can price your experience only if you describe the room.

Weak- Greeted guests, took orders, served food and drinks, and processed payments in a fast-paced restaurant.
Strong- Ran a six-table section through 120-140 covers on Friday and Saturday dinner in a 90-seat chef-driven room, coursing on Toast with the expo; held the highest dessert attachment on the service team for three quarters and trained five new servers through their trail shifts.
What to include
Restaurant type and seat count - service style - section size and covers - POS - check average or attachment rate - training and closing responsibility - who you reported to.
Education

Education and certifications

Nobody is hired to serve on a degree, but the compliance credentials are a hard filter: many states require a food handler card, and most restaurants that pour alcohol require an alcohol server certification or a state permit before you can be put on the schedule. Put them near the top with their expiry dates. A high school diploma or GED is enough education for the role, and a hospitality program is worth listing if you have one.

  • ServSafe Food Handler, with the issue date - required in many states before your first shift
  • State food handler card where your state runs its own: California Food Handler Card, Texas Food Handler, Illinois
  • Alcohol server certification: ServSafe Alcohol or TIPS, with the date
  • State seller-server permit where required: TABC in Texas, BASSET in Illinois, MAST in Washington, RBS in California
  • High school diploma or GED, or the degree you are studying for and your graduation year
  • Hospitality or culinary coursework, wine study such as WSET Level 1 or 2, or an in-house wine program
  • Allergen training, CPR or first aid if the property required it
Careful
Alcohol and food handler credentials expire, and the renewal period differs by state. An expired certification on a resume reads worse than none, because it tells a manager you stopped tracking it.
No experience

Waiter resume with no experience

Serving is one of the few jobs where you can be hired the same week with no restaurant history, because managers hire for pace, composure and availability more than for a resume. What they will not do is hire someone who has not read the room: applying to a fine dining restaurant with nothing but a blank page rarely works, while a busy casual restaurant, a diner or a hotel banquet floor will train you.

Two moves make the difference. Get the food handler card your state requires before you apply, so you are schedulable on day one. And write your non-restaurant work as volume and pressure: a checkout line on Black Friday, a coffee bar during morning rush, a catering shift for 300 guests. Then say plainly which shifts you can work, because open weekends and holidays is itself a qualification.

  • Food handler card already in hand, with the issue date
  • Alcohol server certification if you will be pouring - many are done online in a few hours
  • Any high-volume customer-facing work written with numbers: guests, transactions, covers
  • Support roles that count as floor time: busser, food runner, host, dishwasher, barback, catering staff
  • Open availability stated outright: nights, weekends, holidays, doubles

Mistakes

Common mistakes

Duties instead of volume

'Greeted guests, took orders, delivered food' describes the job description, not you. Covers, section size and turns are what let a manager decide whether you survive their Saturday.

Leaving out the POS

A server who already runs Toast or Aloha saves the restaurant days of training. Leaving the system out of the resume throws away your cheapest advantage.

Hiding or fudging availability

Restaurants schedule around nights, weekends and holidays. If you cannot work Friday dinner, say so up front - being found out in week two costs you the job and the reference.

Claiming fine dining you have not done

Coursing, crumbing, synchronized drops and wine service are visible within ten minutes of a trail shift. Apply to the room you can work now and say what you want to learn.

A photo and a decorative template

Hotel and restaurant group systems parse plain text. Columns, icons and headshots either get dropped or get read as clutter, and a photo invites a bias problem nobody in US hiring wants.

No certifications on the page

If a manager cannot see a food handler card and an alcohol certification, they have to assume you do not have them, which means paperwork and a delay before your first shift.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Service style, volume and credentials, in that order. One line that says the kind of room you work, the section size and covers you carry, the POS you run, and the food handler and alcohol certifications you hold. A general manager reading between shifts wants to know within five seconds whether you can be dropped into their floor, and that paragraph answers it. Save anything about being friendly and hardworking - it is assumed, and it takes space a number could use.
Yes, by name and with what you did on it - coursing and firing, splitting checks, comps and voids, closing out a station. Toast, Oracle MICROS Simphony, NCR Aloha, TouchBistro and Square for Restaurants all behave differently, and a server who already knows the terminal is on the floor days earlier. Restaurants also put the system name in the job posting, so it doubles as an ATS keyword.
It depends on the state and on whether you pour alcohol. Many states require a food handler card, and some require a specific state-issued one such as the California Food Handler Card. For alcohol, some states mandate seller-server training and others leave it to the employer or the insurer, but TIPS and ServSafe Alcohol are the two most widely recognised programs, and states like Texas, Illinois and Washington run their own permits. Check the requirement for your state, get the card before you apply, and put the date on the resume.
Do not put dollar figures on the page. Tip income varies enormously by restaurant, shift, city and tip-out structure, and a number on your resume just invites an argument you cannot win. Show the thing behind the tips instead: check average against house average, dessert or wine attachment rate, repeat guests who ask for your section, a sales contest you won. That is the evidence that actually transfers to a new room, and it is what a manager uses to decide which section you get.
Different enough that you should keep two versions. Fine dining reads for coursing, wine and spirits knowledge, tableside technique, discretion and steadiness, so your wine study, tasting menu experience and small-section work go first. Casual and high-volume reads for speed, table turns, upselling, and sidework that never slows the room, so covers, turns and check average lead. The same four years of work can support either page; only the order and the vocabulary change.
Yes, and it happens every week, but aim at the right rooms. High-volume casual restaurants, diners, hotel banquets and chains hire and train constantly, while chef-driven fine dining almost always wants a floor history first. Come with the food handler card your state requires already in hand, write your retail, catering or coffee experience as guests served and pace handled, take a busser or food runner opening if it is offered, and state open availability. Nights, weekends and holidays are a real qualification.
One page. Under ten years of experience is one page in US hiring, and hospitality is stricter about it than most fields because the person reading is doing it standing up. List your last three or four restaurants with dates, and summarise anything older in a single line. Big gaps are worth a short honest note rather than a stretched date, because restaurant references get called.
