Business Analyst Resume 2026 - BRD, SQL and Agile sample for India free

A business analyst resume in India is read for three things: the documents you have actually written, the domain you can speak in, and how soon you can join. BRD, FRD and user stories are the craft, SQL and Excel are the proof you can check a number yourself, and JIRA with Confluence shows you have lived inside a sprint. Service companies in Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad hire BAs in volume for client-facing delivery and screen you through an ATS first; product companies in Bengaluru and Gurgaon run a case round on requirement trade-offs and expect you to argue for scope. Below is a full sample with documents, stakeholder work and impact in numbers, plus the fresher route through domain certification and a written portfolio.

Business analyst resume sample

The structure that clears screening at both service companies and product firms: domain first, documents and ceremonies with the teams they served, and impact in numbers.

Domain in the first two lines

BFSI, insurance, e-commerce, healthcare or supply chain. A BA is hired for a vocabulary, not a generic skill, and recruiters search Naukri on the domain word before anything else.

Documents named, not implied

BRD, FRD, user stories with acceptance criteria, process flows, wireframes, UAT test cases. Write how many, for which release, and who signed off on them.

Location and notice period up top

Indian hiring runs on joining dates. Current city, preferred city and notice period in the header save the recruiter a call and keep you in the pipeline.

ATS friendly

One BA opening can pull several hundred applications and the first cut is automated: single column, plain headings, tools written as text, no skills hidden inside an image or a table.

Sample resume text

Use it as a reference: keep the structure and wording, put in your own facts and numbers.

Business analyst profile summary

Three or four lines: years of experience, the domain you know, the documents you own, the delivery model you work in, and one number that proves impact. The hiring manager decides from this paragraph whether to put you in front of a client, so nothing generic belongs here.

A fresher writes the same paragraph from projects instead of jobs: the domain course you finished, the process you actually mapped, the BRD you wrote for a college or freelance project, and the SQL you can run when someone asks where a number came from.

WeakDetail-oriented business analyst with good communication skills and knowledge of SDLC and Agile. Seeking a challenging role in a reputed organisation where I can utilise my analytical skills.
StrongBusiness Analyst with 4 years in retail banking and lending, Pune. Owned requirements for a loan origination platform: 3 releases a year, 40+ BRDs and FRDs, 300+ user stories in JIRA. Cut requirement rework in UAT by 35% by adding acceptance criteria and a signed-off process flow to every story, and ran the change-request process with a US client team across a 10.5 hour time gap. CBAP certified. Notice period 60 days.
Tip
Name the domain before the methodology. 'Agile business analyst' describes half the market; 'business analyst in retail lending, KYC and collections' describes one person, and that is who gets the call.
Skills

Business analyst skills for a resume

Elicitation, documentation, a query language, a tracker, and the vocabulary of one business domain. Every line here has to survive the question 'walk me through how you did that'.

Hard skills

  • Requirement elicitation: stakeholder interviews, workshops, job shadowing, document analysis
  • Documentation: BRD, FRD, SRS, user stories with acceptance criteria, traceability matrix
  • Process modelling: AS-IS and TO-BE flows, BPMN, swimlanes in Visio, Lucidchart or draw.io
  • SQL: joins, aggregations, subqueries, checking data yourself before raising a defect
  • Advanced Excel: pivot tables, XLOOKUP, Power Query, scenario and gap analysis sheets
  • JIRA and Confluence: backlog grooming, sprint boards, epics and story mapping, release notes
  • Agile ceremonies: sprint planning, daily stand-up, review, retrospective, backlog refinement
  • Wireframing and prototyping: Figma, Balsamiq, annotated screens the developer can build from
  • UAT: test scenarios, defect triage, sign-off coordination with business users
  • Domain depth: BFSI (KYC, NPA, payments, lending), insurance (claims, underwriting) or e-commerce (catalogue, order flow, returns)

Soft skills

  • Turning a one-line business ask into a requirement a developer can estimate
  • Saying no to scope creep without losing the stakeholder relationship
  • Running a call with client stakeholders in a different time zone and closing every open point
  • Explaining a technical constraint to a business head without engineering jargon
  • Negotiating priority between two stakeholders who both want their item in this sprint
  • Written English clear enough that an onsite team can act on your document unaided
  • Chasing sign-off until the approval actually exists in writing
  • Documenting a decision so the reason survives after everyone on the call leaves the project
  • Picking up a new domain fast when you move from lending to insurance claims
  • Staying calm and factual in UAT when a defect turns out to be a missed requirement
Experience

How to write business analyst experience

Formula: business area plus what you elicited or documented plus the artefact plus a number. Not 'gathered requirements', but from whom, for what product, how many stories, and what changed once the release went live.

In an IT services team the client name is often under NDA - name the domain and the scale instead. 'US insurance client, 12 lakh claims a year, 8 member scrum team' tells a reader far more than an internal account code ever will.

Weak- Gathered requirements from stakeholders and prepared BRD documents for the project.
Strong- Owned requirements for the digital onboarding journey of a retail lending platform: ran 20+ workshops with credit, risk and operations, wrote 14 FRDs and 180 user stories with acceptance criteria, and cut UAT rework by 35% across 3 releases by attaching a signed-off process flow to every epic.
What to include
Domain and product - stakeholders you faced - documents written and how many - team size and delivery model - what shipped - rework, TAT or adoption improved - who signed off.
Education

Education and certifications

There is no single BA degree in India, and that works in your favour. B.Tech, BCA, B.Com, BBA and MBA all land BA roles, and an MBA in finance or marketing pairs well with a domain-heavy product. Write the full college, the university, the year of passing and your percentage or CGPA - Indian recruiters still ask, and an education block with no score reads as something hidden.

  • Degree, college, university and year of passing, with percentage or CGPA
  • Class 12 and Class 10 percentage only while you are a fresher - drop them after 2-3 years of work
  • CBAP, CCBA or ECBA from IIBA, with the year, once you meet the experience hours
  • PSPO or CSPO if you are aiming at the BA-to-product-owner path
  • Domain certifications that recruiters actually filter on: NISM or NCFM for capital markets, IRDAI-linked insurance courses, banking operations programmes
  • MBA or PGDM with the specialisation spelled out, plus the live project if it was domain-relevant
  • Employer-run academies and internal domain certifications - they count, name them
Careful
Do not list a certification you are still studying for. 'CBAP pursuing' takes a line that a finished BRD or a shipped release would use better - mention it in the interview instead.
Freshers

Business analyst resume for freshers

Entry level BA hiring in India is crowded and slightly odd: most openings ask for domain experience nobody can have on day one, and most fresher CVs answer with the same SDLC vocabulary copied from a course. What separates a fresher is written evidence - a document somebody could actually build from.

Pick a process you can observe: your college admission flow, a local shop moving to online orders, a friend's clinic appointment system. Map the AS-IS, write a short BRD with 10 to 15 user stories and acceptance criteria, draw the TO-BE flow, and put the link in your resume. One finished document set outweighs any number of course badges, because the interview will be about your choices in it.

  • 1-2 written requirement samples with public links: BRD, process flow, user stories
  • One finished certification: ECBA from IIBA, or a domain course in banking or insurance
  • Internship or live project, even unpaid, written with what you delivered in numbers
  • Provable SQL and Excel: a HackerRank profile, or an analysis sheet you can screen-share
  • Final-year project written like work: stakeholders, scope, artefacts, outcome

Mistakes

Common mistakes

SDLC theory instead of work

'Familiar with Waterfall, Agile, Scrum, Kanban and SDLC phases' is a syllabus line. Every BA has read it. Write which ceremony you ran, for a team of what size, and what you changed about how it ran.

Requirements with no stakeholder

A requirement matters because somebody asked for it and somebody signed it off. Name them by role: credit head, branch operations, the client product owner in Chicago. Documents with no owner read as templates.

No numbers anywhere

Stories written, releases shipped, defects prevented, TAT reduced, users onboarded, rework cut. Without figures, four years of work reads exactly like four months.

No domain anywhere

A BA who is domain-neutral is competing with everyone. Even one year in lending, claims or catalogue operations is a filter you can pass and most applicants cannot.

Personal details that do not belong

Aadhaar number, PAN, marital status, father's name and a photo add nothing to a BA CV, and putting an Aadhaar or PAN number on a document you email to strangers is a genuine risk.

One resume for services and product roles

Services delivery rewards documentation discipline, client communication and change control. Product companies reward outcome ownership, discovery and saying no to features. Reorder the bullets for each application.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The domain, then the artefacts, then the tools. Recruiters filter on BFSI, insurance, healthcare, e-commerce or supply chain long before they read your methodology section, because a BA is hired for a vocabulary. After the domain, name what you have written - BRD, FRD, user stories with acceptance criteria, process flows, UAT cases - with counts and releases attached. Tools come third: JIRA, Confluence, SQL, Excel, Visio or Figma. Use the same words the job ad uses, in your headline, your summary and your skills section.
For most Indian BA roles, yes, at a working level. You do not have to tune queries, but you should be able to join two tables, filter, aggregate and check whether a number the business is arguing about is actually in the data. It is also the fastest way to stop being dependent on a developer for every question. Write the SQL you can run, not the word 'SQL' - the screening round is where the claim gets tested.
Do not put a number on the resume at all - keep expected CTC for the application form and the recruiter call, where it belongs. To decide the number, read current listings on Naukri, LinkedIn and AmbitionBox for your exact city, experience band and domain, because packages move fast and last year's figures mislead. What raises the package is consistent: a domain the employer sells into, direct client or stakeholder ownership rather than note-taking, product companies over a services bench, working SQL and data skills, and a BA who has shipped rather than only documented. Quote a range drawn from live postings, and keep your current CTC and notice period consistent everywhere, because both get verified.
Yes, one line in the header: current location, preferred location, notice period. Indian recruiters plan around joining dates and a 90-day notice changes which roles you fit. Hiding it wastes a week of everyone's time and never works in your favour, because it comes out in the first call anyway.
It is worth it once you already have the experience hours, and close to useless before that. CBAP requires several thousand hours of BA work, so nobody reads it as a beginner credential - it reads as proof that you have been doing the job long enough to be audited on it. Mid-career, it helps most in consulting, BFSI and anywhere a client sees your CV. As a fresher, ECBA is the honest entry point, and a written requirement sample will do more for you than either.
Rewrite the work you already do in requirement language without inventing anything. A tester who writes test scenarios has been reading acceptance criteria for years; an operations executive knows the AS-IS process better than any consultant. Write which process you know end to end, what you documented or improved, which stakeholders you dealt with, and what changed. Then move SQL, JIRA and one domain to the top, take on requirement work inside your current company first, and apply with that internal experience on the CV.
In Indian service companies the BA usually grows into a lead BA, then a functional consultant or delivery manager. In product companies the same person grows into a product owner and then a product manager, and the shift is about accountability: a BA is measured on the clarity of requirements, a PO on whether the released thing worked. If that is your target, start collecting outcome numbers now - adoption, conversion, TAT, support tickets avoided - not just documents delivered.
