Cloud hiring in the US runs on three signals in a fixed order. First the provider and the certification, because that is what the recruiter can verify in five seconds. Then the two things that are hard to fake in an interview: networking and identity - VPC design, hybrid connectivity, IAM boundaries, what happens when a subnet cannot route. Then the number that makes you easy to approve: the cloud bill you brought down. Migration experience sits over all of it, because most US enterprises are still mid-journey and hybrid environments are the normal case rather than the exception. Below is a full example written in that order, with the landing zone work, the migration waves and the savings in real figures.

Cloud engineer resume example

Ordered the way a cloud hiring manager reads: provider and certifications first, then networking and identity depth, then migrations and the money you saved.

Provider and certification in the first screen

AWS, Azure or Google Cloud with the exact certification name and year. Cloud is the specialty where the badge genuinely moves a recruiter screen, and burying it on page two wastes it.

Networking and IAM depth

VPC and subnet design, Transit Gateway or ExpressRoute, security groups against network ACLs, IAM roles and permission boundaries, service control policies. These are the interview questions, so they belong in the bullets.

Cost as a headline achievement

'Cut monthly spend 34% across three accounts with rightsizing, Savings Plans and a tagging policy' is the single most approvable line on a cloud resume, because it pays for the hire in the first quarter.

ATS friendly

Single column, standard headings, no photo, no logos or tables. Certification names have to appear as plain text - a parser cannot read the badge image you pasted in, and that is the keyword you most need matched.

Sample resume text

Use it as a reference: keep the structure and wording, put in your own facts and numbers.

Profile

Cloud engineer profile summary

Three or four lines: years of experience, your primary provider and the certification that proves it, the size of the estate, the workloads you have moved, and one cost or reliability number. Estate size is the fastest way to communicate seniority here - the number of accounts or subscriptions, workloads and regions you have been responsible for.

Say whether you work in a regulated or hybrid environment, because it changes who wants you. Healthcare with HIPAA, federal work with FedRAMP, finance with PCI DSS, or a data centre still holding half the workloads - all of these are common in US cloud hiring and all of them narrow the field of candidates who have actually done it.

WeakCloud engineer with experience in AWS, Azure, GCP, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform and Linux. Seeking an opportunity to work with cutting-edge cloud technologies in a growing organisation.
StrongCloud Engineer, 7 years on AWS with Azure as a secondary, AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional. Runs a 14-account AWS Organizations estate across three regions for a healthcare payer under HIPAA. Designed the landing zone and the Transit Gateway hub that replaced 22 peering connections, led a 40-workload migration off VMware with no unplanned downtime, and cut monthly cloud spend 34% through rightsizing, Savings Plans and storage lifecycle policies.
Tip
Write the certification exactly as the provider names it, with the year: 'AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate', not 'AWS certified'. Recruiters search the literal string and an approximation may not match.
Skills

Cloud engineer skills for a resume

One provider you know to architecture depth, real networking and identity, infrastructure as code, and the governance and cost controls that keep a large estate from becoming ungovernable.

Hard skills

  • AWS core services: EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, IAM, Route 53, CloudFront, Lambda, CloudWatch
  • Azure equivalents: Virtual Networks, Entra ID, Azure Storage, Azure SQL, Azure Monitor, Azure Policy
  • Cloud networking: subnet and CIDR design, route tables, security groups against network ACLs, Transit Gateway, VPN and Direct Connect or ExpressRoute, PrivateLink, DNS
  • Identity and access: IAM roles and policies, permission boundaries, service control policies in AWS Organizations, Azure role-based access control, federation with SAML or OIDC
  • Landing zones and governance: AWS Control Tower, multi-account or multi-subscription structure, guardrails, the Well-Architected Framework
  • Infrastructure as code: Terraform modules and remote state, CloudFormation or Bicep, drift detection
  • Migration practice: discovery and dependency mapping, rehost and replatform decisions, wave planning, cutover and rollback runbooks, AWS Migration Hub or Azure Migrate
  • Hybrid and on-premises: VMware, Active Directory integration, Azure Arc or AWS Outposts, storage gateways, latency-sensitive workload placement
  • Cost management: Cost Explorer or Azure Cost Management, tagging strategy, Savings Plans and Reserved Instances, spot capacity, storage lifecycle, per-team showback
  • Security and compliance: encryption with KMS or Key Vault, secrets management, logging and audit trails, HIPAA, PCI DSS or FedRAMP controls

Soft skills

  • Explaining a cloud bill to a finance director in terms they can act on
  • Planning a migration wave around a business calendar nobody will move for you
  • Running a cutover weekend calmly, including the decision to roll back
  • Saying no to an over-permissive IAM request and offering the scoped version
  • Documenting an architecture so an auditor and a new engineer both understand it
  • Working with application owners who do not want their system touched
  • Presenting a trade-off between cost, resilience and speed without hiding the downside
  • Building a tagging discipline other teams will actually follow
  • Mentoring infrastructure staff through their first cloud certification
  • Clear written English in design documents, runbooks and change records
Experience

How to write cloud engineer experience

Formula: the estate or the workload, the architectural decision, the services used, and the result in availability, latency, risk or money. Not 'managed AWS infrastructure', but how many accounts, what was in them, what you changed and what it saved or prevented.

Migrations are the strongest bullets a cloud engineer has and most people compress them into one line. Break them out: how many workloads, over how long, how they were discovered and sequenced, what the cutover and rollback plan looked like, how much downtime there actually was, and what the run cost was before and after.

Weak- Managed AWS cloud infrastructure and supported migration of applications from on-premises data centre.
Strong- Led a 40-workload migration from a VMware data centre to AWS over 11 months: mapped dependencies with Migration Hub, sequenced six waves around the claims processing calendar, rehosted 31 workloads and replatformed 9 onto RDS and ECS, and completed every cutover inside its maintenance window with zero unplanned downtime. Run cost landed 26% below the data centre baseline.
What to include
Estate size in accounts, workloads and regions - the provider and services - networking and identity design - migration waves and downtime - compliance regime - monthly spend before and after - who you worked with on the application side.
Education

Education and certifications

Cloud is the specialty where certifications carry the most weight on paper, because the exams map closely to the work and the vendors keep them current. A degree is useful and rarely decisive; many strong cloud engineers came from system administration, networking or support. Put the certifications high, name them exactly, and include the year - the major ones expire.

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate as the entry credential, Professional as the seniority signal
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) and Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305)
  • Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect for Google-centric employers
  • A specialty exam where it matches the role: AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialty or AWS Certified Security - Specialty
  • HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate, which nearly every posting's tooling list implies
  • Networking foundation such as CCNA if you came in through infrastructure - it still reads well for hybrid roles
  • Degree, university and year in one line, plus any public architecture write-ups or reference repositories
Careful
Listing associate-level certifications in all three providers reads as breadth without depth. One provider at professional or expert level plus working knowledge of a second is a much stronger profile.
Entry level

Cloud engineer resume without a cloud job title

Almost nobody is hired directly into a cloud engineering role. The routes in are system administration, help desk and desktop support, networking and data centre operations - and every one of those jobs contains work that is already cloud-adjacent, usually undersold on the resume.

Get one certification to clear the screen, then build something you can be interviewed about: a multi-account structure in a free tier, a VPC with public and private subnets and a NAT gateway you configured yourself, a site-to-site VPN into a home lab, all of it defined in Terraform and documented with a diagram. Being able to explain why a private subnet instance could not reach the internet, and how you fixed it, is worth more than any number of completed courses.

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate or Microsoft AZ-104, passed and dated
  • A public repository with Terraform building a real network topology, plus a diagram and a README
  • Hands-on networking and identity work you can narrate: routing, subnets, roles, federation
  • Your current infrastructure job rewritten around automation, migration support and access management
  • Linux and Windows administration depth - hybrid environments still run on both and interviewers probe it

Mistakes

Common mistakes

A service catalogue instead of architecture

Thirty AWS service names in a row proves you have read the console menu. Which services you chose for which workload, and what the alternative would have cost, is the same knowledge shown by someone who has designed something.

No networking anywhere

Cloud interviews go to networking fast because it is where people are weakest. A resume with no subnet design, no hybrid connectivity and no DNS reads as someone who has only ever launched instances in a default VPC.

Certification badges as images

Applicant tracking systems cannot read an image, and the certification is the keyword most likely to be filtered on. Write the full name and year as plain text, and keep the badges for LinkedIn.

Migrations written in one line

The migration is the most interesting thing on most cloud resumes and is usually compressed into eight words. Waves, dependencies, downtime, rollback and the cost difference are what a hiring manager wants to spend the interview on.

No cost story

Cloud spend is scrutinised in every US organisation large enough to have a cloud engineer. A candidate who has never looked at Cost Explorer is a candidate who has only ever built, never operated.

Claiming all three clouds equally

AWS, Azure and Google Cloud listed as equal strengths is read as shallow in all three. Pick the one the posting names, show depth there, and present the others as working familiarity.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

A DevOps resume is organised around the delivery pipeline: build times, deployment frequency, change failure rate, how quickly the team recovers. A cloud engineer resume is organised around the platform itself: account structure, networking, identity, migrations, compliance and cost. The two overlap and many postings mix them, so read the responsibilities and lead with the matching half. If the job is mostly pipelines and release engineering, the DevOps engineer page covers that angle better.
A network engineer owns the physical and logical network - routing and switching, firewalls, WAN, often vendor hardware and protocols like BGP and OSPF. A cloud engineer owns the virtual network inside a provider and how it connects back to the corporate one. Hybrid roles want both, and network engineers moving into cloud have a real advantage because the connectivity questions that trip everyone else up are already familiar. See the network engineer page for the traditional infrastructure framing.
The one that matches the employer's provider. In the US market AWS has the largest share of postings, so AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate is the most broadly useful entry credential and the Professional level is the clearest seniority signal. Azure dominates in enterprises already committed to Microsoft, where AZ-104 and AZ-305 are the equivalents. A specialty exam - Advanced Networking or Security - is worth more than a third provider's associate badge if the role calls for that depth.
Attach the engineering to the saving. 'Cut monthly spend 34%' is good; 'cut monthly spend 34% by rightsizing 180 over-provisioned instances, moving stateless services to Graviton, buying Savings Plans against a measured baseline and adding S3 lifecycle rules, with a tagging policy that made per-team showback possible' is what gets you hired. It shows you understood the workloads well enough to change them safely, which is the actual skill.
Yes, and it is undervalued by candidates. A large share of US enterprises run permanently hybrid - regulatory constraints, latency-sensitive systems, hardware they have already paid for. Experience with VMware, Active Directory integration, ExpressRoute or Direct Connect, and workloads that genuinely could not move makes you useful to exactly the employers with the largest cloud teams. Do not hide it to look more cloud-native.
None - leave it out and discuss it in the recruiter screen after asking their range. To set your expectation, read live postings for your metro area, provider and level, since many US states now require a published pay range and those listings are the most current evidence available. The factors that raise the rate are stable: professional-level certification rather than associate, real networking and security depth, migration leadership, regulated environments such as HIPAA, PCI DSS or FedRAMP, and a documented history of reducing spend.
Terraform fluency is effectively mandatory, and Python or PowerShell for automation is expected in most postings. You are generally not interviewed as a software engineer, but a resume with no infrastructure as code reads as someone who works in the console, which is a hard no for any team managing more than a handful of accounts. If your background is manual administration, a public Terraform repository is the fastest way to fix that impression.
Yes - the full example above, and every template on this page. You can build your own resume from any of them in the builder for free and see the result; downloading the finished PDF is paid, by subscription or a one-time payment.
