A hospital emergency department and a quiet corporate lobby are the same job title and completely different work.

Licensing

Guard card, armed licensing and background checks

Licensing for security officers is handled state by state, not federally, and the differences are real. California issues a guard registration through its Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, commonly called a guard card, with separate permits for an exposed firearm and for a baton. Florida issues a Class D licence for unarmed work and a Class G for armed, through its Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. New York registers security guards through its Division of Criminal Justice Services and requires pre-assignment training, on-the-job training and annual in-service training. Texas runs private security through the Department of Public Safety, with a non-commissioned level for unarmed officers and a commissioned level for armed. A small number of states have no statewide licence and leave the requirement to the employer or the city. Contract security is one of the most accessible entry points in the country, because the large firms hire continuously to cover posts that must be staffed every hour of every day. The two real barriers are the state credential and the background check, and both can be dealt with before you apply.

Get the licence your state requires first if you can - in many states the training is short and available online or through a local provider, and applying with the card already in hand puts you ahead of most of the queue. Then build the resume from transferable evidence: military or corrections service, any job where you held keys, handled cash, checked identification or dealt with the public, a clean driving record for patrol posts, and clear written English for reports.

Common mistakes

Licence details vague or missing

Guard card in a state that does not call it that, or no expiry date, or no statement of armed status. The licence determines which posts you can work, so it goes near the top with the agency name and the expiry.

No numbers on the work

Cameras monitored, access points covered, alarms responded to, reports filed, escorts completed, medical assists. Security is documented work, which means the numbers exist and most applicants never use them.

Overstating authority

Writing that you arrested people or enforced the law is a fast way to lose a client-facing interview. Describe what you actually did - detained under the client's policy, issued a trespass warning, held the scene until police arrived.

Leaving the client site out

A hospital, a data centre, a construction site and a shopping centre are different worlds with different clients. Naming the site type is often what matches you to the account that has an opening.

Ignoring report writing

The written report is the product the client pays for and the thing that gets read again after an incident. A line about report volume and quality is worth more than a paragraph about being observant.

Availability not stated

Overnight, weekend and holiday coverage is where the vacancies are. A candidate who states availability for those shifts is solving the account manager's actual problem and will usually be called first.

Identified a forced door on patrol and secured the area pending police response. Avoid language that implies police powers you do not have, because that is exactly what an account manager is listening for.
Post orders are the written instructions for a specific post at a specific client site: what to check, when to patrol, who to admit, what to do in each type of incident and who to call. They are the contract between the security firm and the client made operational, and following them exactly is most of the job. On a resume it is worth saying that you worked to post orders, contributed to updating them, or trained new officers on them, because that tells a hiring manager you understand the difference between judgement and improvisation.
It depends on temperament as much as anything. A static post such as a lobby desk or a console is consistent, sheltered and heavy on access control, visitor handling and camera work, and it suits someone who is good with people and with documentation. Patrol, whether on foot or in a vehicle, covers ground, finds things static posts never see, and involves more time alone, more weather and more driving. Many officers do both across a career. If you have done both, say so, because it makes you far more flexible to schedule.
Expect fingerprinting and a criminal history check at state level and usually federal level as well, because that is what state licensing and most clients require. Employers also commonly check your employment history, your driving record if the post involves a vehicle, and run a drug screen. Some client sites - government, defence, ports, healthcare, financial - have their own additional clearance requirements on top. If you have something in your history, look up your state's eligibility rules before assuming you are excluded, because many states consider the offence type and how long ago it was.
It is one of the common ones, and agencies generally view it favourably because it demonstrates report writing, radio use, working overnights and keeping composure with the public. It is not a shortcut - becoming a police officer still means applying to an agency and completing a state-certified academy and field training.
