Paralegal Resume 2026 - litigation support, e-discovery and drafting free sample

Paralegal is one of the few professional roles in the United States that is generally not licensed. Most states do not issue a paralegal licence at all, a small number including California set statutory education requirements for using the title, and certification through NALA, NFPA or NALS is voluntary but carries real weight with employers. That absence of a licence changes what the resume has to do. With no credential doing the screening for you, the page itself has to prove competence: the case types you have supported, the volume of documents you have processed, the platforms you can open on day one, the filings you have made without a bounce-back, and whether you can draft something a partner will sign. Add the commercial fact that most private firms run on billable hours, and the shape becomes clear. Below is a full sample, plus how the same experience reads differently to a law firm and to an in-house legal department.

Paralegal resume sample

Built for a hiring attorney and a legal recruiter reading fast: practice area first, then platforms, then what you have drafted, filed and produced, in numbers.

Practice area before anything else

Litigation, corporate, immigration, real estate, IP, employment, personal injury. The skills barely transfer between them and firms hire for the one they have open, so put yours in the headline rather than leaving it to be inferred from your employers.

Platforms named exactly

Relativity, Everlaw, Logikcull, Disco, Concordance, Clio, Filevine, Westlaw, Lexis, PACER and CM/ECF. Legal recruiters search on these strings literally, and e-discovery platform experience is often the single most valuable line on a litigation paralegal resume.

Volume and filings

Documents reviewed and produced, privilege log entries, depositions summarised, trials supported, e-filings made in federal and state courts. Volume is how a hiring attorney calibrates whether you can handle their docket.

Billable reality, stated carefully

Private firms run on hours. If you carried a target and met it, say so with the target attached, since targets vary widely by firm and by market. In-house roles do not work this way, so drop it from that version of the resume.

Profile

Paralegal profile summary

Four lines: years of experience, practice area, the courts you file in, the platforms you run, and one number that shows scale. A hiring attorney is deciding whether to hand you a live case file, so write the paragraph that answers that.

A new paralegal writes the same paragraph from a programme and an internship: the ABA-approved programme, any certification passed, the software you learned properly, and the real documents you worked on. Specific and modest beats broad and unverifiable every time in this field.

WeakHighly organised paralegal with excellent attention to detail and strong communication skills. Seeking to leverage my legal knowledge to support a dynamic legal team.

Tip
Write the courts you actually file in, federal and state, by name. It is a small line that tells a hiring attorney you know a district's local rules and filing quirks, which is the thing they are quietly worried about.
Skills

Paralegal skills for a resume

Document work, drafting, research and court procedure. Every platform and standard here is a literal search term for a legal recruiter, so spell them correctly.

Hard skills

  • E-discovery platforms: Relativity, Everlaw, Logikcull, Disco, Concordance, and the EDRM workflow
  • Document review and production: search terms, Bates numbering, redactions, privilege logs, load files
  • Litigation holds, custodian interviews and collection tracking
  • Drafting: pleadings, discovery requests and responses, subpoenas, motions, correspondence
  • Cite-checking and Bluebook or ALWD formatting, with Shepard's on Lexis and KeyCite on Westlaw
  • Legal research in Westlaw and LexisNexis, including docket research on PACER
  • Court filing: federal CM/ECF and state e-filing portals, with local rules and deadline calculation
  • Deposition preparation and summaries, exhibit lists, trial binders and witness files
  • Case and matter management systems: Clio, Filevine, ProLaw, Aderant, iManage or NetDocuments
  • Corporate and transactional support: closing binders, entity filings, minute books, due diligence indexes

Soft skills

  • Protecting a deadline when three attorneys each believe their matter is first
  • Catching the error in a filing at eight in the evening and saying so
  • Managing a client contact who wants legal advice you are not permitted to give
  • Keeping a document universe organised so anyone can find the exhibit under pressure
  • Working with vendors and court clerks who each have unwritten rules
  • Absolute discretion about matters, clients and anything overheard in the office
  • Writing so a partner can sign a draft after light editing rather than a rewrite
  • Staying accurate at hour eleven of a trial preparation day
  • Asking the question that reveals a scope problem before it becomes a cost problem
  • Training a junior paralegal without simply doing the task yourself
Experience

How to write paralegal experience

Formula: case type and forum, plus what you produced, plus the platform, plus the volume. Not 'assisted with discovery', but which phase, on what scale, in what tool, and what the result of your work was.

Do not name clients or reveal matter details. Describe case types, forums and volumes instead: 'a commercial dispute in the Northern District of Texas' is fully informative and discloses nothing. A resume that names a confidential client tells a hiring attorney exactly the wrong thing about you.

Weak- Assisted attorneys with discovery, prepared documents for filing, maintained case files and conducted legal research.
Strong- Ran document review and production for a commercial dispute in federal court: managed about 240,000 documents in Relativity across 9 custodians, built a 3,100 entry privilege log, and delivered three rolling productions on schedule with no clawback requests.
What to include
Practice area and forums - document volumes and platforms - filings made and rejection rate - drafting you did and who signed it - depositions and trials supported - billable target met - juniors trained.
Education

Education and certification options

There is no national paralegal licence. Most states do not regulate the role, a few set statutory education requirements for people using the title, California being the best-known example, and employers otherwise rely on education and voluntary certification. An ABA-approved paralegal programme is the most widely recognised credential in education terms. On the certification side the main bodies are NALA, which awards the Certified Paralegal, NFPA, whose PACE examination leads to the Registered Paralegal designation, and NALS, which offers the Professional Paralegal. Check your own state's rules before describing yourself as a paralegal in a regulated state.

  • Paralegal certificate or degree, with whether the programme is ABA-approved stated explicitly
  • Bachelor's degree with major and institution, which many large firms prefer alongside the certificate
  • NALA Certified Paralegal (CP), with the year you certified
  • NFPA Registered Paralegal (RP) through PACE, or the CORE Registered Paralegal designation
  • NALS Professional Paralegal (PP) or Accredited Legal Professional (ALP)
  • Platform certifications, particularly the Relativity certifications, which firms value directly
  • Notary public commission, with the state and expiry, since firms use it constantly
  • Continuing legal education relevant to your practice area, with the year
Careful
Certified Paralegal is a specific NALA credential, not a general description of someone who completed a certificate course. If you finished a programme but did not sit a certification examination, write 'paralegal certificate' rather than 'certified paralegal'.
New paralegals

Paralegal resume with no law firm experience

Entry into this field is competitive because firms carry real risk when a deadline is missed, so they look for evidence that you already understand procedure rather than only legal concepts. That evidence can come from an internship, a clerk role, a court volunteer programme or a legal aid clinic.

Then lead with the software. A new paralegal who can genuinely operate an e-discovery platform, run a Westlaw search properly and format citations to the Bluebook is immediately more useful than one who cannot, and those are all things you can learn and prove before your first firm job.

  • Internship or clerk role written as a job, with the practice area and documents you touched
  • Legal aid or clinic volunteering, including intake and document preparation
  • Platform skills with evidence: Relativity training, Westlaw or Lexis certification, Clio familiarity
  • Citation and drafting work from your programme, with the format named
  • Administrative or records roles that prove deadline discipline and confidentiality
  • Certification status: exam passed, scheduled, or the programme completed

Mistakes

Common mistakes

Practice area left vague

A corporate paralegal and a litigation paralegal do almost unrelated work. If a reader has to deduce yours from employer names, they will often deduce wrong and move on to the next application.

No volumes anywhere

Documents reviewed, pages produced, privilege log entries, depositions summarised, filings made, matters supported. Volume is the profession's currency, and its absence reads as a small practice or a small role.

Naming clients or matters

Confidentiality is the whole job. Describe case types and forums, never client names or facts specific enough to identify a matter. A breach on the resume is the fastest possible way to fail a legal interview.

'Certified' used loosely

Certified Paralegal is a NALA credential, Registered Paralegal is an NFPA one, and a certificate programme is neither. Write exactly what you hold, because the firms that care about certification know the difference.

Billable hours copied from somewhere

Only state a target you actually carried, and give the firm's target alongside your figure. Targets vary a great deal by firm, city and practice, so a number with no context invites a question you will not enjoy.

A designed resume in a law firm system

Legal recruiters and firm applicant systems handle plain documents best, and many recruiters reformat resumes before sending them on. Single column, standard headings, no photo, no tables, consistent dates.

Takeaways

Takeaways

Remember

  • Practice area in the headline, not implied
  • E-discovery and case management platforms named exactly
  • Document volumes, filings and matters in numbers
  • Certification written precisely: CP, RP, PP or a certificate
  • No client names and no identifiable matter facts
  • Billable target only where you genuinely carried one

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

A lawyer's resume is built on the bar admission, the jurisdictions they are admitted in, and matters where they exercised legal judgement. A paralegal resume has no licence to lead with, so it is built on procedural competence: platforms, document volumes, filings, drafting and deadline discipline. The other difference is scope. A paralegal cannot give legal advice or represent a client, so nothing on the page should imply either. Our lawyer page covers the admission-led version if that is the role you are aiming at.
In most states, no. Paralegals are generally not licensed, and a certificate or degree plus experience is what employers weigh. A few states, California among them, set statutory education requirements for using the title, so check your own state's rules. Voluntary certification through NALA, NFPA or NALS does carry weight with many employers and some government roles, and it is a reasonable investment if you are competing for a first job or moving into a larger firm. Write exactly which credential you hold, because the names are not interchangeable.
Usually e-discovery platform competence. Firms pay for someone who can run a review in Relativity or Everlaw, build search terms, handle productions and privilege logs, and manage a document universe without losing it. Write the platform, the scale you have handled and the phase of the process you owned. The second most valuable is a clean filing record in specific courts, because a rejected filing or a missed deadline is the kind of error that reaches the client.
Quite a lot. A firm wants case volume, billable discipline, e-discovery depth, trial support and the ability to work across several attorneys' demands. An in-house legal department wants contract lifecycle work, compliance support, vendor and outside counsel management, entity records, and the ability to work with business teams who are not lawyers. Billable targets are meaningless in-house and should be removed from that version. Keep two files and reorder the bullets rather than sending one document everywhere.
Give the firm's target and what you delivered against it, and only for firms where you genuinely carried a target. Targets vary widely between practice areas, cities and firm sizes, so a number without context is not informative and can look inflated. If you were in a role without a formal target, write about throughput instead: matters supported concurrently, productions delivered on schedule, trials supported in a year. Never quote an industry-standard figure as though it were universal.
Case type, forum, phase and scale. 'Commercial dispute in federal court, document review and production across 9 custodians' is safe and useful. What you must avoid is client names, party names, matter-specific facts, settlement terms and anything that would let a reader identify the case. If a matter was public, it is still safer to describe it generically, because the discipline itself is what a hiring attorney is assessing.
Reframe the substantive work you already do and close the gap on the rest. Calendar management, filings, document preparation and client contact are all genuine paralegal-adjacent tasks, so write them with volumes and courts named. Then add the two things employers look for in the step up: substantive drafting and discovery work, and a credential such as an ABA-approved certificate or a certification examination. Ask your current firm for discovery or drafting work before you apply elsewhere, because doing it at your existing employer is the fastest route to being able to write it.
